00:00:04.947 --> 00:00:12.545
Hey, welcome to Renewed Mindsets, where we study the basics of the faith through the lens of our middle-aged experiences.
00:00:12.545 --> 00:00:13.589
I'm Rick.
00:00:13.589 --> 00:00:24.992
Welcome to the show where I help you Gen Xers and Millennials navigate spiritually through a world that looks nothing like we expected back, when cars were square and mullets were totally awesome.
00:00:24.992 --> 00:00:27.106
I am so glad you're here.
00:00:27.106 --> 00:00:32.329
Welcome back to the Renewed Mindsets podcast.
00:00:32.329 --> 00:00:34.787
I'm Rick and I'm so glad you're here.
00:00:34.787 --> 00:00:38.487
And with me again, by popular demand, is Lauren.
00:00:38.487 --> 00:00:39.529
Say hey, lauren.
00:00:40.170 --> 00:00:41.533
Hey, rick, so good to be back.
00:00:42.000 --> 00:00:44.560
Oh, we're so glad to have you back, lauren.
00:00:44.560 --> 00:00:53.170
Today we're diving right into the heart of Thanksgiving, but no, don't roll your eyes, we're not talking about pumpkin pie or football.
00:00:53.170 --> 00:01:01.250
This episode is all about true biblical Thanksgiving, the kind that changes our hearts and connects us to God.
00:01:02.131 --> 00:01:03.539
That's absolutely right, rick.
00:01:03.539 --> 00:01:05.495
Gratitude isn't just a seasonal tradition For Christians, it's a daily response to God.
00:01:05.495 --> 00:01:05.843
That's absolutely right, rick.
00:01:05.843 --> 00:01:14.805
Gratitude isn't just a seasonal tradition For Christians, it's a daily response to God's goodness, whether life is easy or challenging, we're called to give him thanks in everything we do.
00:01:15.245 --> 00:01:26.689
Exactly 1 Thessalonians 5.18 says give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God.
00:01:26.689 --> 00:01:30.796
To remind us that gratitude isn't conditional, it's a command.
00:01:31.719 --> 00:01:39.671
Yes, and today especially, we're exploring how gratitude for salvation provision, community and even trials shapes us as believers.
00:01:39.671 --> 00:01:40.593
Let's get started.
00:01:41.174 --> 00:01:41.495
All right.
00:01:41.495 --> 00:01:42.822
Well, the first section.
00:01:42.822 --> 00:01:45.090
We'll call it Gratitude for Salvation.
00:01:45.090 --> 00:01:51.840
Let's start with the greatest reason that we have to be thankful our salvation, lauren.
00:01:51.840 --> 00:01:56.072
When we grasp what Jesus did for us, it transforms everything, doesn't it?
00:01:56.941 --> 00:02:07.590
It absolutely does, and I will never forget the first time it really hit me that salvation isn't something we just earn, it's God's free gift, freely given to us.
00:02:07.590 --> 00:02:17.344
I was in a small Bible study and the leader explained Ephesians 2, 8 through 9, for it is by grace you have been saved, through faith, and this is not from yourselves.
00:02:17.344 --> 00:02:21.228
It is the gift of God, not by works so that no one can boast.
00:02:21.228 --> 00:02:23.867
That truth broke me in the best of ways.
00:02:24.340 --> 00:02:27.751
Yeah, that reminds me of a story about the 10 lepers in Luke 17.
00:02:27.751 --> 00:02:32.370
Jesus healed all 10, but only one came back to thank him.
00:02:32.370 --> 00:02:33.412
Isn't that amazing?
00:02:33.412 --> 00:02:36.750
It's so easy to take his blessings for granted.
00:02:37.639 --> 00:02:47.771
It absolutely is, and sometimes we even focus so much on what we're lacking that we forget the exact miracle of salvation itself.
00:02:47.771 --> 00:02:52.610
Imagine if we approached every day with the gratitude of that one leper.
00:02:53.219 --> 00:03:02.093
Yeah, it changes your perspective, and if you're listening today and you haven't accepted Christ's gift of salvation, let this be the moment that you turn to him.
00:03:02.093 --> 00:03:04.545
There's no greater reason to give thanks.
00:03:06.450 --> 00:03:09.830
All right, so next we'll call this one gratitude for provision.
00:03:09.830 --> 00:03:13.289
So, rick, let's talk about gratitude for God's provision.
00:03:13.289 --> 00:03:17.370
This is one area where we sometimes forget to say thank you, isn't it?
00:03:17.850 --> 00:03:18.391
Definitely.
00:03:18.391 --> 00:03:22.131
I remember a time when my family was struggling financially.
00:03:22.131 --> 00:03:27.307
We didn't know how we'd make ends meet, but God provided in ways that we couldn't have imagined.
00:03:27.307 --> 00:03:32.544
A friend showed up with groceries and an unexpected work opportunity came my way.
00:03:32.544 --> 00:03:36.073
It was humbling to see God's hand in every little detail.
00:03:37.181 --> 00:03:40.328
You know this reminds me of the Israelites in the wilderness.
00:03:40.328 --> 00:03:44.742
God provided manna every single day, enough for each day's needs.
00:03:44.742 --> 00:03:46.725
But do you remember how they complained?
00:03:46.725 --> 00:03:48.049
Even with God's provision?
00:03:48.248 --> 00:03:51.213
Yeah, it's such a reminder for us.
00:03:51.213 --> 00:03:56.852
We can be so focused on what we want that we miss what we already have.
00:03:56.852 --> 00:04:04.691
Philippians 4.19 says and my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.
00:04:04.691 --> 00:04:06.074
What a promise.
00:04:07.520 --> 00:04:10.068
And God doesn't meet just our physical needs.
00:04:10.068 --> 00:04:12.949
He provides peace, wisdom and guidance too.
00:04:12.949 --> 00:04:16.550
But we have to trust him and thank him for what he's already given.
00:04:16.670 --> 00:04:16.951
Yes.
00:04:16.951 --> 00:04:22.672
So this next section we'll call Gratitude for Community and Growth Through Trials.
00:04:22.672 --> 00:04:27.942
Now, Lauren, community is another area where we see God's goodness.
00:04:27.942 --> 00:04:33.380
As believers, we're part of the family of God, and that's a gift that we shouldn't overlook.
00:04:34.502 --> 00:04:40.113
Yeah, absolutely, and I think about how the early church in Acts 2, 42 through 47 lived.
00:04:40.113 --> 00:04:44.449
They shared everything, they prayed together and supported one another.
00:04:44.449 --> 00:04:46.793
That's the kind of community we are called to.
00:04:47.440 --> 00:04:55.072
Yeah, that's the kind of community that we have at our church, and it's through that community that God often grows us, especially in hard times.
00:04:55.072 --> 00:04:59.468
I mean, have you ever been through a trial where someone in the church really showed up for you?
00:05:00.630 --> 00:05:01.293
Yes, I have.
00:05:01.293 --> 00:05:03.942
It's been over a year.
00:05:03.942 --> 00:05:24.418
Someone important to me walked out, completely turned away from what we all believe in, and it was in that time where I really saw that every single person in our church really showed up for us, prayed us through, fought spiritual warfare for us.
00:05:24.418 --> 00:05:28.264
They brought meals and just listened when I needed to talk.
00:05:28.264 --> 00:05:34.101
Their support reminded me of God's love in every single way.
00:05:35.324 --> 00:05:39.891
Yeah Well, the trials themselves, as hard as they are.
00:05:39.891 --> 00:05:52.002
Those are opportunities for growth, though, and even though they're hard, James 1, 2 through 4 tells us to consider it pure joy when we face trials, because they produce perseverance.
00:05:54.045 --> 00:05:54.665
Exactly.
00:05:54.665 --> 00:06:01.038
And gratitude doesn't mean we ignore the pain, but it shifts our focus to God's faithfulness in the midst of it.
00:06:02.286 --> 00:06:12.600
Well, as we close this up, we've talked about gratitude for salvation and provision and community, and even trials.
00:06:12.600 --> 00:06:16.988
Thanksgiving isn't just a holiday, it's a lifestyle.
00:06:18.814 --> 00:06:28.853
Right, and as we head into this Thanksgiving season, I'm going to challenge ourselves to be more intentional about saying thank you, not just with our words, but with our actions as well.
00:06:29.454 --> 00:06:32.370
Yeah, take time to reflect on what God has done for you.
00:06:32.370 --> 00:06:35.298
Write it down, share it with your family.
00:06:35.298 --> 00:06:37.232
Let it deepen your worship.
00:06:38.505 --> 00:06:41.014
And also don't forget to thank the people around you too.
00:06:41.014 --> 00:06:50.620
You know there are people, especially in our church, that have showed up for us time and time again and prayed with us, got in the muddy trenches with us.
00:06:50.620 --> 00:06:55.495
Gratitude is contagious, and it's one way we reflect Christ to the world.
00:06:56.036 --> 00:07:00.274
Yeah Well, thank you for joining us today on Renewed Mindsets.
00:07:00.274 --> 00:07:07.519
We pray that you have a blessed Thanksgiving filled with joy and gratitude and the presence of God.
00:07:08.466 --> 00:07:09.709
Happy Thanksgiving, everyone.
00:07:09.709 --> 00:07:10.653
See you next time.
00:07:10.793 --> 00:07:11.836
Happy Thanksgiving.
00:07:11.836 --> 00:07:14.105
We love you, see ya, bye See ya.
00:07:14.105 --> 00:07:25.668
Bye, and now humorous thoughts from Lauren All right.
00:07:25.869 --> 00:07:31.595
A lady purchased a parrot whose previous owner had taught him profanity and decided that she would reform him.
00:07:31.595 --> 00:07:36.540
The parrot learned a number of Christian words and Bible verses to replace the cuss words.
00:07:36.540 --> 00:07:43.057
However, the owner caught him cussing one day and grabbed him and said I'll teach you to never talk that way again.
00:07:43.057 --> 00:07:45.850
So she put him in the deep freeze and slammed the door.
00:07:45.850 --> 00:07:51.312
A few minutes later the owner took the parrot out of the freezer and asked have you learned your lesson?
00:07:51.312 --> 00:07:51.552
Now?
00:07:51.552 --> 00:07:54.550
The little bird shivered and replied yes, ma'am.
00:07:55.613 --> 00:08:00.108
After a couple of months the lesson was forgotten and the little parrot was caught saying cuss words again.
00:08:00.108 --> 00:08:04.346
The owner returned him to the freezer and left him in there for a long time.
00:08:04.346 --> 00:08:06.992
The little parrot almost froze to death.
00:08:06.992 --> 00:08:10.367
The owner took the bird back to his cage to let him thaw out.
00:08:10.367 --> 00:08:15.048
When he began to move a little bit, she asked him again did you learn your lesson this time, buster?
00:08:15.048 --> 00:08:17.593
The parrot said yes, ma'am, I sure did.
00:08:17.593 --> 00:08:23.286
Then he just sat there in the cage quietly for a few more minutes, shivering and thinking about what just happened to him.
00:08:23.286 --> 00:08:28.286
Then the parrot looked at his owner and said ma'am, may I ask you a serious question.
00:08:28.286 --> 00:08:30.331
The owner answered yes, you may.
00:08:30.331 --> 00:08:43.307
The parrot thought for a moment and then said I thought I knew all of the bad words there were in the world, but just what exactly did that turkey?
00:08:43.567 --> 00:08:44.589
in the freezer say.
00:08:44.589 --> 00:08:53.899
Today we're going to talk about gratitude, specifically how we can cultivate a heart of thanksgiving that goes beyond our immediate circumstances.
00:08:53.899 --> 00:09:01.110
Our main idea today is this Learning to be grateful is about much more than just your immediate circumstances.
00:09:01.110 --> 00:09:03.620
Our main idea today is this Learning to be grateful is about much more than just your immediate circumstances.
00:09:03.620 --> 00:09:06.488
You can't let what's going on in your life determine the level of thanksgiving in your life.
00:09:06.488 --> 00:09:12.147
Instead, let your thankfulness spring from your understanding of God's character.
00:09:12.147 --> 00:09:16.452
Now let's start by looking at the prophet Habakkuk.
00:09:17.355 --> 00:09:20.679
The book of Habakkuk is set during a dark time in Israel's history.
00:09:20.679 --> 00:09:26.658
The reform-minded King Josiah had been killed and Israel's fallen back into sin.
00:09:26.658 --> 00:09:34.599
Habakkuk is struggling with God's silence and God's seeming unwillingness to judge Israel's wickedness.
00:09:34.599 --> 00:09:39.985
In the third chapter of Habakkuk, he prays for God to revive his work in Israel.
00:09:39.985 --> 00:09:46.239
But towards the end of this prayer, we read these powerful words in Habakkuk 3, 17-18.
00:09:46.239 --> 00:10:14.715
Though the fig tree should not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines, the produce of the olive fail and the yields fail, no food, the flock be cut off from the fold and there be no herd in the stalls, you know, despite the potential hardships that will come with God's judgment, habakkuk resolves to take joy in God's salvation.
00:10:14.715 --> 00:10:18.091
Now, that is a profound statement of faith.
00:10:18.091 --> 00:10:29.307
Habakkuk is not ignoring the reality of a situation, but rather he's choosing to find his joy and gratitude in God, regardless of his circumstances.
00:10:30.549 --> 00:10:34.938
Now, a lot of times, we judge everything from our limited perspective.
00:10:34.938 --> 00:10:39.866
We see no reason to be thankful unless we have what we believe we need.
00:10:39.866 --> 00:10:43.934
But Habakkuk teaches us a different perspective.
00:10:43.934 --> 00:10:49.852
He tells us how to show gratitude even if we don't have what we want or need.
00:10:49.852 --> 00:10:56.011
This teaches us to prioritize what God is doing in a situation over our own wants and needs.
00:10:56.011 --> 00:11:09.351
Now, how often do you find yourself only being grateful when things go your way, when your health is good, when your finances are stable, when your relationships are thriving, right?
00:11:09.351 --> 00:11:11.456
But what about when things are tough?
00:11:11.456 --> 00:11:20.927
Habakkuk's example shows us that our gratitude should not be dependent on our circumstances, but it should be rooted in God's character.
00:11:20.927 --> 00:11:31.254
Now, our ultimate source of thanksgiving should come from what God has revealed about himself in the Word and in the person of Jesus Christ.
00:11:31.254 --> 00:11:36.753
Let's reflect on some key aspects of God's character that should fill our hearts with gratitude.
00:11:37.875 --> 00:11:38.977
First, his love.
00:11:38.977 --> 00:11:43.091
God bestows His blessings without discrimination.
00:11:43.091 --> 00:11:54.129
The followers of Jesus are children of God and they should manifest the family likeness by doing good to everybody, even those who deserve the opposite.
00:11:54.129 --> 00:11:58.216
God's love is unconditional and all-encompassing.
00:11:58.216 --> 00:12:04.034
We're loved by God, not because of who we are, but because of who he is.
00:12:04.034 --> 00:12:09.471
This love should be a constant source of our gratitude.
00:12:12.379 --> 00:12:13.220
And his patience.
00:12:13.220 --> 00:12:20.821
Quite honestly, most people are quick to write someone off, but our God is a God of second chances.
00:12:20.821 --> 00:12:26.259
Learn from the one who's patient with you and you'll learn to be patient with others.
00:12:26.259 --> 00:12:32.580
God's patience with us is a testament to his incredible mercy and grace.
00:12:32.580 --> 00:12:40.844
He gives us chance after chance after chance to turn back to him, and that should fill us with thankfulness.
00:12:40.844 --> 00:12:49.164
His salvation, since no man is excluded from calling upon God.
00:12:49.164 --> 00:12:51.423
The gate of salvation is open to all.
00:12:51.423 --> 00:13:00.730
There's nothing else to hinder us from entering nothing but our own unbelief.
00:13:00.730 --> 00:13:05.558
The gift of salvation is available to everyone.
00:13:05.558 --> 00:13:09.774
The fact that we have the opportunity to be saved and have eternal life with God is something that should always be at the forefront of our gratitude.
00:13:10.836 --> 00:13:12.219
So what about God's sovereignty?
00:13:12.219 --> 00:13:16.128
What does it really mean to affirm God's sovereignty?
00:13:16.128 --> 00:13:20.785
It means that God rules over all space and time in history.
00:13:20.785 --> 00:13:26.934
It means that he created the world for his glory and he directs the cosmos to his purpose.
00:13:26.934 --> 00:13:32.649
It means that no one can truly thwart his plans or frustrate his determination.
00:13:32.649 --> 00:13:44.576
It means that we're secure in the knowledge that God's sovereign purpose to redeem a people through the atonement accomplished by his son will be fully realized.
00:13:44.576 --> 00:13:49.746
God's sovereignty assures us that nothing happens outside of his control.
00:13:49.746 --> 00:13:57.368
Now that should give you peace and gratitude, knowing that your life is in his hands.
00:13:59.597 --> 00:14:00.621
Then you got God's wisdom.
00:14:00.621 --> 00:14:11.004
Wisdom is the power to see and the inclination to choose the best and highest goal, together with the surest means of attaining it.
00:14:11.004 --> 00:14:15.961
Wisdom is the practical side of moral goodness.
00:14:15.961 --> 00:14:26.484
It's found in its fullness only in God, and he alone is naturally and entirely and invariably wise.
00:14:26.484 --> 00:14:31.118
God's wisdom guides us in every aspect of our lives.
00:14:31.118 --> 00:14:36.269
Trusting in His wisdom should lead us to be grateful for his guidance and direction.
00:14:36.269 --> 00:14:38.357
Then you've got his mercy.
00:14:38.357 --> 00:14:45.038
The mercy of God is an all-embracing mercy and it breaks down the barriers that man puts up.
00:14:45.038 --> 00:14:50.489
God's mercy is limitless and it breaks down all barriers.
00:14:50.489 --> 00:14:57.128
His mercy toward us, despite our shortcomings, should inspire deep gratitude in our hearts.
00:14:57.128 --> 00:15:02.125
Everything about God is great and vast and incomparable.
00:15:02.125 --> 00:15:09.003
He never forgets, he never fails, he never falters, he never forfeits His Word.
00:15:10.434 --> 00:15:14.746
Now, as the book of Hebrews tells us, we are receiving an unshakable kingdom.
00:15:14.746 --> 00:15:18.144
That's Hebrews 12, 26 through 29.
00:15:18.144 --> 00:15:26.365
At the time, his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised yet once more I will shake not only the earth, but also the heavens.
00:15:26.365 --> 00:15:40.003
This phrase, yet once more, indicates the removal of all things that are shaken, that is, things that have been made, in order that the things that cannot be shaken might remain.
00:15:40.003 --> 00:15:55.143
We got to be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, so we need to offer to God acceptable worship with reverence and awe, because our God is a consuming fire.
00:15:56.105 --> 00:15:57.869
Now, why is this kingdom so firm?
00:15:57.869 --> 00:16:05.086
Because the author and the finisher of this kingdom is himself unshakable.
00:16:05.086 --> 00:16:14.658
This means that we can look past our immediate situation towards a kingdom that we're inheriting, one that we can trust is steadfast and trustworthy.
00:16:14.658 --> 00:16:19.140
That should cause thanksgiving to constantly well up within us.
00:16:19.140 --> 00:16:32.871
So, as I close this up, let's remember that our gratitude should be based or should not be based on the changing tides of our circumstances, but on the unchanging character of our God.
00:16:32.871 --> 00:16:51.148
Just as Habakkuk resolved to rejoice in the Lord despite his dire situation, we can find joy and thankfulness in knowing who God is, our understanding of God's love and patience and salvation, and sovereignty and wisdom and mercy.
00:16:51.148 --> 00:16:56.788
That should fill our hearts with gratitude, regardless of what we face in life.
00:16:56.788 --> 00:17:23.811
Let's be grateful for receiving a kingdom that can't be shaken and offer to God acceptable worship with reverence and awe, father God, may our lives be marked by a deep, abiding gratitude that comes from knowing and trusting in the unchanging character of you, our Father, our amazing God, amen.
00:17:26.316 --> 00:17:28.304
Well, that's all for this week's show.
00:17:28.304 --> 00:17:32.025
You know the name of this show speaks my hope for you.
00:17:32.025 --> 00:17:35.884
It's taken from the words of Romans 12, verse 2.
00:17:35.884 --> 00:17:50.266
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind that by testing, you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

00:19:14.977 --> 00:19:18.421
We've got another holiday to worry about.

What's all the commotion?
00:19:21.664 --> 00:19:23.667
We've got another holiday to worry about.
00:19:23.667 --> 00:19:24.669
It seems Thanksgiving Day is upon us.
00:19:24.669 --> 00:19:30.862
I haven't even finished eating all my Halloween candy, Sally.
00:19:30.862 --> 00:19:32.390
Thanksgiving is a very important holiday.
00:19:32.390 --> 00:19:38.633
Ours was the first country in the world to make a national holiday to give thanks.
00:19:38.633 --> 00:19:40.057
Isn't he the cutest thing?
00:19:40.057 --> 00:19:43.405
What are you going to do on Thanksgiving, Charlie Brown?
00:19:43.405 --> 00:19:53.711
My mother and dad and Sally and I are all going over to my grandmother's for dinner.
00:19:53.711 --> 00:19:54.654
Why don't you come along, Linus?
00:19:54.654 --> 00:19:56.400
We can hold hands under the table.
