So fasting is often one of the more misunderstood of the spiritual disciplines.

It's probably the case because there's a lack of awareness about it in our culture and even though there's been somewhat of an increase here lately, most of us don't know anybody who regularly practices fasting, or we don't know anybody who practices fasting ourselves like us.

It's not taught here very often, but Jesus himself taught it and practiced it.

So, on that note, that's what I'm going to discuss today is primarily the kind of fast that comes with giving up food.

Now, the others are good and I'm going to do a bonus, at least one bonus episode on other types of fasting.

I mean other things to fast from, you know, but today we're going to talk about the kinds of fasts that you can participate in when it comes to food.

Now the first one, which is the most common, is just a regular, normal fast.

It involves fasting from food but not water.

In Matthew, the book of Matthew, chapter 4, verse 2, it tells us that Jesus fasted for 40 days and for 40 nights and that he was hungry.

It doesn't mention that he was thirsty.

And in Luke, chapter 4, verse 2, it says that he ate nothing during those days, but again, it doesn't say that he drank nothing.

Since the human body can only function a few days without water, I'm going to assume and most people do that he drank water during that time.

This is the type of fast abstaining from food only.

That is the most common type of fast for Christians today.

Then you've got partial fasts.

In the book of Daniel, chapter 1, verse 12, when, for 10 days, daniel and his three friends only had vegetables and water to drink.

Historically, christians have done this by eating smaller portions of food or eating only a few simple things, and this is good.

We're told in the book of Ezra, chapter 10, verse 6, that Ezra withdrew neither eating bread nor drinking water, for he was mourning over the faithlessness of the exiles.

Now, when Esther questioned that the Jews fast and pray on her behalf, in Esther, chapter 4, verse 16, she said Go, gather all the Jews to be found in Susa and hold fast on my behalf and do not eat or drink for three days, day or night.

These are examples of an absolute fast.

Then you've got two instances in Scripture of what we'll call a supernatural fast.

And when Moses met with God on Mount Sinai, in Deuteronomy 9.9, he said I remained on the mountain for 40 days and 40 nights.

It's not repeatable, apart from the Lord's specific calling and miraculous provision.

Now, the fast that I talked about earlier, that Jesus went through, was a private fast.

Now we'll see that at least part of the church in Antioch was fasting together.

In Acts, chapter 13, verse 2, where Luke says while they were worshiping the Lord and fasting.

Then the Bible talks about a national fast 2 Chronicles, 20, verse 3, and Jonah, chapter 3, verses 5 through 8.

In response to an invasion, king Jehoshaphat in 2 Chronicles called a national fast.

Jehoshaphat was afraid and turned his attention to seek the Lord and proclaimed a fast throughout all of Judah.

Historically, even in our nation, congress proclaimed national fasts.

Now you've got a regular fast.

This is the kind of fast that's implied by Jesus in Matthew 9.15 when he said can the wedding guest mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them?

So the most common fasting today that you're going to see for Christians is normal, private and occasional fasting.

Now, what you need to keep in mind is that fasting as a believer is expected.

Now we often use these passages to show that it's expected of believers to give and to pray, and since there's no indication anywhere in Scripture that fasting has ceased and that in Acts the people fasted, we can be sure that Jesus still expects us to fast.
