You know, when it comes to demons, most Christians believe that there's two ways that the mnemonic operate With oppression, where bad things happen around us, and with possession, where a demon completely takes over somebody's body.

Whether it's oppression or possession, both have biblical foundations.

But there's a third way that demons operate and it's more common in scripture and it provides a more accurate and full view of how the demonic forces work against the lives of believers.

It's called occupation, and when we're dealing with spiritual warfare, occupation more often than not is what we read about in the Bible.

The Bible uses the word demonized, not possession, when they're talking about demonic activity, and that tells us that it's not nearly as all or nothing as we might think.

Now, the image that Jesus uses in the Bible is from Luke, chapter 11, 24 through 26, and it's about a house when an evil spirit leaves a person, it goes into the desert searching for rest.

But when it finds none, it says I will return to the person I came from.

So it returns and finds that its former home is all swept and in order.

Then the spirit finds seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they all enter the person and live there, and so that person is worse off than before.

So I want you to imagine leasing a large house from somebody and then renting off several other rooms to other tenants.

Now, some tenants are great and they don't cause any problems, but there's other ones that are less than ideal.

They play loud music, they leave trash all over the place, they steal your neighbor's packages and at any point, because they don't own a room, they don't own that room the landlord could ask the tenant to leave by the owner's authority.

So look at it this way the house represents our lives and Jesus is the owner of that house.

But Jesus has given us, as managers or as landlords, the ability to sublet those rooms.

They move in and they bring all kind of destruction with them, and the destruction not only affects that part of the house but the whole house.

And that's why the apostle Paul, in Ephesians 4, 26 and 27, speaks of holding onto bitterness as giving a place to the devil.

Giving place is essentially subletting a room to the devil.
