00:00:00.381 --> 00:00:07.788
Today on Renewed Mindsets, I'm going to jump into something that might sound a little unusual, but I believe it's incredibly relevant.
00:00:07.788 --> 00:00:19.606
Today's National Absurdity Day Now, when we think about absurdity, we usually picture things that just don't make sense, head-scratching moments in life, and sure life is filled with them.
00:00:19.606 --> 00:00:25.211
But these days, oh my gosh, absurdity has been taken to the next level.
00:00:25.211 --> 00:00:36.551
We're going to talk about the strange and absurd choices that we're seeing all over the place today, online and in our personal lives as a society.
00:00:36.551 --> 00:00:38.304
How do you describe it?
00:00:38.304 --> 00:00:53.320
So absurd, so absurd, so absurd.
00:00:53.320 --> 00:00:56.889
Hey, welcome to Renewed Mindsets, where we study the basics of the faith through the lens of our middle-aged experiences.
00:00:56.889 --> 00:00:57.088
I'm Rick.
00:00:57.088 --> 00:01:07.731
Welcome to the show where I help you, gen Xers and Millennials, navigate spiritually through a world that looks nothing like we expected back, when cars were square and bullets were totally awesome.
00:01:07.731 --> 00:01:09.846
I am so glad you're here.
00:01:09.846 --> 00:01:15.225
I'm just going to say it.
00:01:15.225 --> 00:01:18.748
Society has lost its freaking mind.
00:01:18.748 --> 00:01:21.507
I got to sit here and laugh.
00:01:21.507 --> 00:01:37.728
You got to laugh at some of the absurdities that are out there, but we've also got to talk about the serious consequences, the consequences of forgetting God, because most of the things that we're seeing, most of the things that you know that I'm talking about.
00:01:37.728 --> 00:01:43.012
The people have lost their way and they're living without God.
00:01:43.012 --> 00:01:46.769
Culture has lost its way.
00:01:46.769 --> 00:01:49.382
There's a lot to talk about.
00:01:49.382 --> 00:01:53.831
Let's get going when we talk about finding meaning.
00:01:54.733 --> 00:01:58.266
People are looking in every possible direction.
00:01:58.266 --> 00:02:00.349
It's more obvious now than ever.
00:02:00.349 --> 00:02:03.042
People are struggling to find purpose.
00:02:03.042 --> 00:02:08.264
You could see it in the news, you could see it on social media posts.
00:02:08.264 --> 00:02:10.912
You can see it just talking with people.
00:02:10.912 --> 00:02:16.068
Anxiety and depression and stress are at all-time highs.
00:02:16.068 --> 00:02:27.054
People are looking for answers, and the answers that they're coming up with are there's multiple genders, there's multiple um, there's there, there.
00:02:27.054 --> 00:02:28.925
There's multiple sex as a construct.
00:02:28.925 --> 00:02:32.016
Listen, I'm even stuttering because it's so.
00:02:32.016 --> 00:02:33.862
Some of this stuff is so stupid.
00:02:33.862 --> 00:02:53.467
It's like we had a bunch, we had a group of people that were talking and completely serious, saying that the sky is green and they all believed it, and then you've got a whole generation of people that are looking at them like they're nuts and we're being told that we're the ones that there's something wrong with.
00:02:53.467 --> 00:02:57.360
Think about these influencers on social media.
00:02:57.360 --> 00:02:59.783
They're just chasing success.
00:02:59.783 --> 00:03:03.929
They're spending hours curating the perfect lifestyle.
00:03:03.929 --> 00:03:09.034
They're spending hours curating the perfect lifestyle, only to admit in interviews or in posts that they feel empty inside.
00:03:09.034 --> 00:03:17.842
It's absurd that in a world filled with so much, people are still left longing.
00:03:17.862 --> 00:03:19.605
I want to read a verse from Ecclesiastes.
00:03:19.605 --> 00:03:29.469
King Solomon, that man had everything he was wealthy, he was wise, he had all the pleasures of life at his fingertips.
00:03:29.469 --> 00:03:34.091
But here's what he said in Ecclesiastes 1, verse 2.
00:03:34.091 --> 00:03:39.132
I'm going to read this from the New Living Translation Y'all ready.
00:03:39.132 --> 00:03:45.413
Everything is meaningless, completely meaningless.
00:03:45.413 --> 00:03:51.992
Solomon realized that without God, everything else is just chasing the wind.
00:03:51.992 --> 00:04:02.248
So living without God, ignoring the one who gives us purpose and meaning, that's the definition of absurdity.
00:04:02.248 --> 00:04:08.192
It's like standing in front of an ocean but insisting that it's only a puddle.
00:04:08.192 --> 00:04:22.761
When we ignore God, we reduce life to a series of disconnected, random events, instead of seeing the beautiful and purposeful creation that it is Now.
00:04:22.781 --> 00:04:28.913
This brings me to my next point the cultural absurdities that we see around us.
00:04:28.913 --> 00:04:32.665
Oh my gosh, how long do we have?
00:04:32.665 --> 00:04:34.369
Right now?
00:04:34.369 --> 00:04:39.240
We're living in a time where moral standards are changing every day.
00:04:39.240 --> 00:04:46.867
Some things that would have been unimaginable a few decades ago are celebrated now, and yet here we are.
00:04:46.867 --> 00:04:54.394
The more we change and redefine truth, the more chaotic life gets Right.
00:04:54.394 --> 00:04:58.336
Look at how society approaches identity.
00:04:58.336 --> 00:05:11.579
The world is telling us that we can define ourselves, however we want, completely independent of any external guidance.
00:05:18.600 --> 00:05:22.680
And while I don't want to focus too much on individual choices, I do want to point out that, in a broader sense, this mentality has created confusion.
00:05:22.680 --> 00:05:33.586
Let's look at some of the current events.
00:05:33.586 --> 00:05:36.399
For example, this year alone, we've seen debates about identity, about boundaries of gender and sexuality.
00:05:36.399 --> 00:05:44.139
We've seen issues about what constitutes basic truth.
00:05:44.139 --> 00:06:00.206
Schools are revising curriculum standards and even fundamental biological concepts are being questioned because people have decided that their feelings are more important than truth.
00:06:00.206 --> 00:06:02.949
In a lot of places, even the idea of personal responsibilities become subjective.
00:06:02.949 --> 00:06:17.204
And all the while, while these changes are happening, there's been an increase in confusion and a decrease in well-being, especially among young people.
00:06:17.204 --> 00:06:21.733
Studies are showing the skyrocketing rates of mental health issues among teenagers.
00:06:21.733 --> 00:06:27.040
Now, most of them, many of them say they feel disconnected from reality.
00:06:27.040 --> 00:06:38.872
And here's the absurdity we keep doubling down on the same methods that are causing harm, all while pushing God and his truths further out of the picture.
00:06:40.319 --> 00:06:46.031
God's word is clear about who we are and it provides stability and guidance.
00:06:46.031 --> 00:06:47.973
That's been proven for centuries.
00:06:47.973 --> 00:06:57.009
Psalm 139, 13, and 14 says For you created my inmost being, you knit me together in my mother's womb.
00:06:57.009 --> 00:07:00.810
I praise you because I'm fearfully and wonderfully made.
00:07:00.810 --> 00:07:02.406
Your works are wonderful.
00:07:02.406 --> 00:07:05.004
I know that full well.
00:07:05.004 --> 00:07:09.826
God knows who we are and he has a purpose for each of us.
00:07:11.992 --> 00:07:16.521
Now, when we reject this truth, we're left with nothing solid to stand on.
00:07:16.521 --> 00:07:23.850
The world tells us to find our truth, or to live your truth but apart from God, or to live your truth but apart from God.
00:07:23.850 --> 00:07:29.696
All we're doing is living out opinions and feelings, and that's dangerous.
00:07:29.696 --> 00:07:34.343
That's an unstable way to live.
00:07:34.343 --> 00:07:44.637
It's as if society is standing on sand that's shifting and when the storms come, there's nothing to hold on to.
00:07:44.637 --> 00:07:50.264
Now, in the midst of all this uncertainty, we got to have something that's rock solid, and that's the Bible.
00:07:51.968 --> 00:08:00.990
Now I know a lot of people are going to say well, the Bible is old-fashioned or it doesn't fit with modern views.
00:08:00.990 --> 00:08:11.531
Well, here's the thing God's Word doesn't need to change because it's already perfect, it's timeless, and that's what gives it its power.
00:08:11.531 --> 00:08:19.550
I was reading recently, and I came across, an article where the writer was discussing the latest self-help trends.
00:08:19.550 --> 00:08:25.752
They were trying to solve this deep existential problem with surface-level advice.
00:08:25.752 --> 00:08:28.889
It's like trying to patch a sinking ship with a Band-Aid.
00:08:29.899 --> 00:08:33.090
Meanwhile, the Bible has answers that go straight to the heart.
00:08:33.090 --> 00:08:40.610
Proverbs 3, 5, and 6 says Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.
00:08:40.610 --> 00:08:44.451
In all your ways, submit to him and he will make your path straight.
00:08:44.451 --> 00:08:48.325
Understanding In all your ways, submit to him and he will make your path straight.
00:08:48.325 --> 00:08:54.398
When we lean on God, we have stability and clarity and peace, regardless of what the world is saying.
00:08:54.398 --> 00:08:59.927
I'll give you another example Budgeting financial security.
00:08:59.927 --> 00:09:18.532
Now, with the economy going to the toilet, people are struggling, but the Bible has clear teachings on stewardship and generosity and contentment, and if we follow these principles, we can have peace, even in uncertain times.
00:09:19.399 --> 00:09:24.706
Isn't it absurd to ignore that kind of wisdom because we think we know better Now?
00:09:24.706 --> 00:09:36.835
While the world tells us to find peace in success and wealth and influence, god tells us to find peace in him, and that's why his word is so valuable.
00:09:36.835 --> 00:09:40.765
It's a roadmap that doesn't lead us astray.
00:09:40.765 --> 00:09:50.133
When we choose to live according to God's word, we're no longer slaves to every new idea or trend yeah.
00:09:50.133 --> 00:09:55.251
Instead, we're rooted in something that's unchanging, something that's solid.
00:09:57.341 --> 00:10:03.133
I want to leave you with a challenge Look around at the world.
00:10:03.133 --> 00:10:11.879
Look at what's happening in your own life and in our culture.
00:10:11.879 --> 00:10:16.884
Do you see the absurdity in trying to find peace and joy and purpose without God?
00:10:16.884 --> 00:10:29.318
Does it make sense to ignore the one who created us, who knows us better than we know ourselves?
00:10:29.318 --> 00:10:35.897
Like I said earlier, today is National Absurdity Day.
00:10:35.897 --> 00:10:53.908
Let's laugh a little bit at the things that are funny and odd, but let's also take a moment to reflect on the more serious absurdities we sometimes overlook the absurdity of ignoring God, of thinking we know better than Him and of trying to build our lives without His guidance.
00:10:56.004 --> 00:11:03.485
If you're somebody who's felt the frustration of chasing after things that don't satisfy, I invite you to turn to God.
00:11:03.485 --> 00:11:15.153
He offers us something that nobody else can a love that fills us, a purpose that fulfills us and a peace that's unshakable.
00:11:15.153 --> 00:11:20.639
Remember, the world is constantly changing.
00:11:20.639 --> 00:11:24.431
There's a solid foundation waiting for you in God.
00:11:24.431 --> 00:11:37.379
So let's go back to that verse in Proverbs, chapter 3, verses 5 and 6 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding.
00:11:37.379 --> 00:11:42.207
In all your ways, acknowledge Him, and he will make straight your path.
00:11:43.760 --> 00:11:49.173
Now I remember a time in my life when I faced a big, significant decision.
00:11:49.173 --> 00:11:58.711
It was one of those situations where you're torn, you don't know which path to take, and every possible option seemed risky or uncertain.
00:11:58.711 --> 00:12:03.471
And I kept thinking if I only had more information I could make a better decision.
00:12:03.471 --> 00:12:16.472
Now, my tendency is to lean on my understanding, to make pros and cons lists, to analyze everything from every angle, hoping that somehow I'd uncover the perfect answer.
00:12:16.472 --> 00:12:26.426
But in the midst of my analyzing, I felt God gently remind me of this verse trust in the Lord with all your heart.
00:12:26.426 --> 00:12:37.653
And that's when I realized I've been relying on myself and my limited understanding, as if I could somehow see a bigger picture on my own.
00:12:37.653 --> 00:12:41.860
If I could somehow see a bigger picture on my own.
00:12:44.706 --> 00:12:47.320
Proverbs 3, verses 5 and 6 isn't just about everyday choices.
00:12:47.320 --> 00:12:57.078
It's about surrendering total control to God, trusting that His understanding far exceeds ours.
00:12:57.078 --> 00:13:02.379
Now I want you to think about a time in your life when you were caught in uncertainty or when you wanted to control the outcome.
00:13:02.379 --> 00:13:05.129
How did it feel to try and handle everything on your own?
00:13:05.129 --> 00:13:22.601
The truth is, as human beings, we don't always understand what's best for us, and that's what makes these verses foundational they remind us that we're not supposed to have all the answers or to see the entire plan.
00:13:22.601 --> 00:13:34.931
We're simply called to trust, to have faith that God's wisdom will guide us, even when we can't see what's ahead Now the phrase with all your heart.
00:13:35.692 --> 00:13:36.614
That's profound.
00:13:36.614 --> 00:13:40.289
It's a call to give everything over to God.
00:13:40.289 --> 00:13:50.552
This is about trusting him with every aspect of your life, not just the big, scary decisions, but also the little everyday moments.
00:13:50.552 --> 00:14:00.125
I remember when a buddy of mine one time shared that every morning he pauses before he gets out of bed and says Lord, I'm going to trust you with my day.
00:14:00.125 --> 00:14:06.732
He taught me that it's the small, simple acts of surrender that train our hearts to trust.
00:14:06.732 --> 00:14:14.721
Now I find myself doing the same thing, just reminding myself each morning that my day is in God's hands.
00:14:14.721 --> 00:14:18.227
And maybe you've got your own morning routine.
00:14:18.227 --> 00:14:26.611
Imagine adding just one extra step to it, just pausing for a second and saying Lord, today I trust you with everything.
00:14:26.611 --> 00:14:32.272
It's simple, but it shifts your focus back to God.
00:14:34.240 --> 00:14:38.869
Now the next part of that verse warns us do not lean on your own understanding.
00:14:38.869 --> 00:14:43.616
Verse warns us do not lean on your own understanding.
00:14:43.616 --> 00:14:51.418
And if I'm being honest, or if you're being honest, how often do you try to figure things out on your own?
00:14:51.418 --> 00:14:59.043
We might even feel like we have all the answers, but our understanding is so limited.
00:14:59.043 --> 00:15:03.327
Now, one time I was working on a project at work and I kept hitting roadblocks.
00:15:03.327 --> 00:15:08.934
Nothing was going as planned and I was frustrated because I thought I knew the best way forward.
00:15:08.934 --> 00:15:18.547
But after trying to force things my way for a while, I finally took a step back and I prayed, asking God for wisdom.
00:15:20.039 --> 00:15:32.129
Now, looking back, I can see how God used that situation to teach me patience and reliance in him, and it reminded me that my understanding isn't always the best.
00:15:32.129 --> 00:15:35.173
But God's perspective is infinite.
00:15:35.173 --> 00:15:38.347
He sees things that I can't.
00:15:38.347 --> 00:15:40.333
He knows things that I can't.
00:15:40.333 --> 00:15:40.919
He knows things that I don't.
00:15:40.919 --> 00:15:45.370
He works in ways that I may never fully understand.
00:15:45.370 --> 00:15:48.607
So think about your own life.
00:15:48.607 --> 00:15:56.431
Is there an area where you've been leaning on your own understanding, trying to make things happen in your strength?
00:15:56.431 --> 00:16:04.489
No, what would it look like to let go of that burden, even just for one day, and trust God to lead you?
00:16:04.489 --> 00:16:10.966
It's a powerful reminder that we don't have to carry the weight of figuring everything out.
00:16:10.966 --> 00:16:16.125
God wants you to lean on his wisdom instead.
00:16:17.554 --> 00:16:31.907
Now that verse goes on to say in all your ways, acknowledge him, not just in some ways, not just on Sundays or when things get tough, but in all our ways.
00:16:31.907 --> 00:16:53.235
This is about inviting God into every area of your life your work, your relationships, your decisions, even your downtime, yeah, even your playtime.
00:16:53.235 --> 00:16:57.236
I've noticed that the more I acknowledge God throughout the day, the more peace I feel Now.
00:16:57.236 --> 00:17:11.171
There was a time when I would only turn to God when things were falling apart, but as I've practiced inviting him into every moment, I found a steadier sense of his presence and now I try to acknowledge him in the little things.
00:17:11.171 --> 00:17:21.746
I was sick a few weeks ago and I've caught myself just thinking about it, laying in bed, really wishing for death.
00:17:21.746 --> 00:17:25.230
It was bad, but you know what I did.
00:17:25.230 --> 00:17:34.992
I laid there and said praise you, father, bless you in the name of Jesus.
00:17:34.992 --> 00:17:41.345
I am breathing and I praised him through the pain.
00:17:41.345 --> 00:17:45.944
Yeah, I'm not patting myself on the back, but you know what.
00:17:45.944 --> 00:17:47.372
I got through that sickness and I'm fine.
00:17:49.102 --> 00:17:52.095
Sometimes you just got to take a moment to pray.
00:17:52.095 --> 00:17:58.207
Sometimes, before you make a phone call or before you start a project, take a moment to pray, to praise him.
00:17:58.207 --> 00:18:11.384
Even in a little, seemingly small act, you'll find God's guidance and peace and a lot of times things are going to work out better than you could have planned.
00:18:11.384 --> 00:18:17.707
Now, what would it look like to acknowledge God in every area of your life?
00:18:17.707 --> 00:18:28.201
It's probably, and it is just as simple as saying thank you, lord, in a moment of joy or asking for wisdom when a challenge arises.
00:18:28.201 --> 00:18:36.060
As you grow in, this, practice become second nature to turn to God Now.
00:18:36.080 --> 00:18:41.190
The final part of that verse is a promise he will make straight your paths.
00:18:41.190 --> 00:18:53.642
God promises to direct us, and this doesn't mean our path is going to be free from obstacles I'm telling you that but it does mean that he will lead us through them in ways that are ultimately good for us.
00:18:53.642 --> 00:19:01.923
I read a story one time about a missionary who was called to serve in a country where Christians were persecuted.
00:19:01.923 --> 00:19:06.412
About a missionary who was called to serve in a country where Christians were persecuted.
00:19:06.412 --> 00:19:08.295
Despite the risks, he trusted God was leading him there.
00:19:08.295 --> 00:19:11.262
Over the years he faced many challenges, but all through it, god provided.
00:19:11.262 --> 00:19:19.974
In unexpected ways, he opened doors that he could never plan for on his own.
00:19:19.974 --> 00:19:28.403
His story reminds me that God's path may not always be easy, but it's going to be right, and when we trust in God, we can be assured that he'll guide us.
00:19:28.403 --> 00:19:39.088
It just might not always look the way we expect it or want it, but we can be confident that it's going to be a good lead, right.
00:19:39.088 --> 00:19:43.246
Maybe you're facing a situation right now that seems uncertain.
00:19:43.246 --> 00:19:46.240
Just remember that God's promise is real.
00:19:46.240 --> 00:19:48.967
He's going to make straight your paths.
00:19:50.736 --> 00:19:52.681
Pray with me, father.
00:19:52.701 --> 00:19:55.548
God, we come before you today with our open hearts.
00:19:55.548 --> 00:19:59.181
Help us to trust you with every part of our lives.
00:19:59.181 --> 00:20:02.929
Remind us, god, that we don't have to understand everything.
00:20:02.929 --> 00:20:08.228
Lord, teach us to rely on your wisdom, which is so much greater than ours.
00:20:08.228 --> 00:20:14.423
Help us to acknowledge you in everything that we do, to invite you into every part of our lives.
00:20:14.423 --> 00:20:21.205
Lead us, father, on the right path, even when it's hard, or even when we can't see what's ahead.
00:20:21.205 --> 00:20:27.238
Even when it's hard, or even when we can't see what's ahead, father God, we trust you and that your way is good.
00:20:27.238 --> 00:20:31.247
Thank you for the security of your promises and thank you for being worthy of all our trust.
00:20:31.247 --> 00:20:35.154
In Jesus' precious name, we pray Amen.
00:20:36.856 --> 00:20:41.344
As you go on through the rest of your day, let's hold on to these words.
00:20:41.344 --> 00:20:43.507
Trust God with all your heart.
00:20:43.507 --> 00:20:44.126
Let's hold on to these words.
00:20:44.126 --> 00:20:44.728
Trust God with all your heart.
00:20:44.728 --> 00:20:46.290
Don't lean on your own understanding.
00:20:46.290 --> 00:20:51.858
Acknowledge him in everything and know that he will guide you.
00:20:51.858 --> 00:21:01.557
Remember, the path may not always be smooth, but it's always going to lead to good, because he's the one that's directing it.
00:21:01.557 --> 00:21:03.617
Well, that's all for this week's show.
00:21:03.617 --> 00:21:07.320
You know, the name of this show speaks my hope for you.
00:21:07.320 --> 00:21:11.203
It's taken from the words of Romans, chapter 12, verse 2.
00:21:11.203 --> 00:21:25.500
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind that, by testing, you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
00:21:27.915 --> 00:21:32.907

00:22:26.377 --> 00:22:31.664

In February, a nudist colony in Pasco County got upset because the post office refused to deliver mail inside their community.
00:22:55.414 --> 00:22:59.407
However, the post office said the colony made them feel uncomfortable.
