00:00:01.080 --> 00:00:02.745
Coming up on Renewed Mindsets.
00:00:02.745 --> 00:00:05.131
Last week was Thanksgiving.
00:00:05.131 --> 00:00:07.847
We are officially in the season.
00:00:07.847 --> 00:00:16.321
As we count down to Christmas with the next few episodes, let's renew our minds on the true meaning of this season Today.
00:00:16.321 --> 00:00:18.469
Jesus the Word.
00:00:18.469 --> 00:00:20.565
Let's go, boys.
00:00:20.565 --> 00:00:35.847
Hey, welcome to Renewed Mindsets, where we study the basics of the faith through the lens of our middle-aged experiences.
00:00:35.847 --> 00:00:36.027
I'm Rick.
00:00:36.027 --> 00:00:46.704
Welcome to the show where I help you, gen Xers and Millennials, navigate spiritually through a world that looks nothing like we expected, back when cars were square and mullets were totally awesome.
00:00:46.704 --> 00:00:48.790
I am so glad you're here.
00:00:48.790 --> 00:00:55.170
Welcome back, everyone, to another episode of Renewed Mindsets.
00:00:55.170 --> 00:00:59.151
I'm Rick and I'm joined by my amazing co-host, lauren.
00:01:00.039 --> 00:01:09.650
Hey everyone, I don't know about you, but I'm so excited about today's episode because we're diving into one of the most awe-inspiring truths of Scripture Jesus as the Word of God.
00:01:09.751 --> 00:01:10.632
That's right, lauren.
00:01:10.632 --> 00:01:21.652
Today we're focusing on two incredible passages Isaiah 9-6, which foretells the coming of Christ, and John 1-14, where we see the fulfillment of that prophecy.
00:01:21.652 --> 00:01:26.682
Now these verses remind us that Christmas isn't just about a baby in a manger.
00:01:26.682 --> 00:01:30.289
It's about the eternal word of God becoming flesh.
00:01:31.632 --> 00:01:35.406
And we're going to be exploring what that means for us today as believers.
00:01:35.406 --> 00:01:38.462
So grab your Bible, settle in and let's get started.
00:01:39.524 --> 00:01:39.864
All right.
00:01:39.864 --> 00:01:42.350
Well, let's just start with Isaiah 9-6.
00:01:42.350 --> 00:02:09.372
It's one of the most beautiful and well-known prophecies about the coming of Christ, and it says this is such a heavy verse packed with so much meaning, isn't it?
00:02:09.979 --> 00:02:16.790
It's not just a poetic description of Jesus, it's actually a declaration of his identity and mission.
00:02:16.790 --> 00:02:19.927
Let's break it down a bit, because there's so much to unpack here.
00:02:20.430 --> 00:02:21.092
Absolutely.
00:02:21.092 --> 00:02:25.288
Let's start with the phrase unto us a child is born.
00:02:25.288 --> 00:02:27.193
Unto us a son is given.
00:02:27.193 --> 00:02:29.462
Now, that's a twofold statement.
00:02:29.462 --> 00:02:37.727
It reminds us that Jesus was fully human, born as a child, and fully divine, given as the Son of God.
00:02:38.930 --> 00:02:40.774
That's a very important distinction as well.
00:02:40.774 --> 00:02:43.710
Jesus wasn't just a prophet or a good man.
00:02:43.710 --> 00:02:45.336
He was God in the flesh.
00:02:45.336 --> 00:02:50.010
Without both his humanity and divinity, he couldn't have fulfilled his role as our Savior.
00:02:50.240 --> 00:02:50.901
Exactly.
00:02:50.901 --> 00:03:03.962
His humanity allowed him to experience everything we go through Hunger, pain, temptation yet he remained without sin and his divinity meant that he was the perfect, sinless sacrifice.
00:03:03.962 --> 00:03:07.311
He was capable of taking on the weight of the world's sin.
00:03:08.312 --> 00:03:12.692
Yeah, and then there's that phrase that says the government will be upon his shoulder.
00:03:12.692 --> 00:03:21.229
That's a very powerful image of authority, you know, and it kind of reminds us that Jesus is king, not just in a spiritual sense, but over all creation.
00:03:21.250 --> 00:03:22.972
Yeah, yeah, over all creation, yeah, yeah.
00:03:22.972 --> 00:03:35.465
And while we might not see his reign fully realized yet, we can rest in the promise that one day every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus is Lord.
00:03:35.465 --> 00:03:39.332
This isn't just a Christmas promise, it's an eternal reality.
00:03:40.033 --> 00:03:42.424
Right Now, let's talk about those names.
00:03:42.424 --> 00:03:47.841
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
00:03:47.841 --> 00:03:51.509
Each one reveals something incredible about Jesus.
00:03:51.509 --> 00:03:52.980
Rick, do you have a favorite?
00:03:54.264 --> 00:03:56.329
I think Mighty God stands out to me.
00:03:56.329 --> 00:03:59.356
It's just powerful and bold.
00:03:59.356 --> 00:04:01.382
It's a declaration of his divinity.
00:04:01.382 --> 00:04:03.986
Jesus wasn't a baby in a manger.
00:04:03.986 --> 00:04:07.661
He is the all-powerful creator of the universe.
00:04:07.661 --> 00:04:09.223
And what about you, Lauren?
00:04:11.027 --> 00:04:14.394
For me, I would say it's Prince of Peace.
00:04:14.394 --> 00:04:21.634
Definitely Because we live in a world that's constantly in darkness and heavy turmoil.
00:04:21.634 --> 00:04:25.629
But Jesus brings a peace that surpasses all understanding.
00:04:25.629 --> 00:04:32.091
It's not just the absence of conflict, it's his presence of his righteousness and assurance.
00:04:32.920 --> 00:04:34.142
My gosh, that's beautiful, Lauren.
00:04:34.142 --> 00:04:38.132
What's amazing about that is that these names aren't just titles.
00:04:38.132 --> 00:04:40.663
They're truths that we can cling to.
00:04:40.663 --> 00:04:44.048
When we feel weak, he's our mighty God.
00:04:44.048 --> 00:04:47.095
When we're confused, he's our counselor.
00:04:47.095 --> 00:04:50.509
When we need peace, he's the prince of peace.
00:04:50.509 --> 00:04:52.574
Yes, definitely.
00:04:52.694 --> 00:04:56.185
It's a reminder that Christmas isn't just about celebrating his birth.
00:04:56.185 --> 00:04:59.351
It's about embracing who he is and what he came to do.
00:05:02.040 --> 00:05:16.052
Okay, now let's move to the New Testament, to John 1.14, which says and the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten, of the Father, full of grace and truth.
00:05:17.141 --> 00:05:20.531
You know this is another verse that's also so rich in meaning.
00:05:20.531 --> 00:05:23.850
First, we see that Jesus is referred to as the Word.
00:05:23.850 --> 00:05:30.872
That ties back to John 1.1, where it says in the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God.
00:05:30.872 --> 00:05:34.387
It's a declaration of his eternal nature, right.
00:05:34.867 --> 00:05:36.250
Jesus wasn't created.
00:05:36.250 --> 00:05:37.874
He's always existed.
00:05:37.874 --> 00:05:40.204
Yes, and he was there in the beginning.
00:05:40.204 --> 00:05:42.127
He was active in creation.
00:05:42.127 --> 00:05:45.754
In fact, everything that exists was made through him.
00:05:45.754 --> 00:05:52.271
The idea of the word emphasizes that Jesus is the ultimate revelation of God.
00:05:53.394 --> 00:05:53.754
Exactly.
00:05:53.754 --> 00:05:56.269
And then it says the word became flesh.
00:05:56.269 --> 00:05:58.146
Think about that for a moment.
00:05:58.146 --> 00:06:06.173
The infinite God, who is beyond time and space, the God of the universe, stepped into his own creation.
00:06:06.173 --> 00:06:15.035
He took on human form, not in power and majesty but in humility, as a small baby born in a manger.
00:06:15.841 --> 00:06:18.249
That's what makes Christianity so unique.
00:06:18.249 --> 00:06:25.548
In every other religion in the world, people are striving to reach God, but in Christianity, god came down to us.
00:06:25.548 --> 00:06:29.505
He became one of us so that he could rescue us.
00:06:30.567 --> 00:06:33.793
Yes, and notice the phrase dwelt among us.
00:06:33.793 --> 00:06:38.249
The original Greek word used here is the same word for tabernacle.
00:06:38.249 --> 00:06:43.805
It's a picture of God's presence dwelling with his people, just as he did in the Old Testament.
00:06:44.867 --> 00:06:50.923
Yeah, but this time it wasn't in a tent or in a temple, it was in the person of Jesus Christ.
00:06:50.923 --> 00:06:57.750
That is an incredible truth, and God didn't just send a message, he sent himself.
00:06:59.204 --> 00:07:01.613
And then there's a part about we beheld his glory.
00:07:01.613 --> 00:07:08.298
When we look at Jesus, we see the glory of God, his character, his love, his holiness.
00:07:08.298 --> 00:07:11.293
It's a glory that is full of grace and truth.
00:07:11.605 --> 00:07:25.197
I love that balance Grace, because Jesus offers forgiveness and unmerited favor and truth, because he reveals God's perfect standard and he calls us to live according to it.
00:07:25.817 --> 00:07:29.514
Exactly, and as believers, we're called to reflect that same balance.
00:07:29.514 --> 00:07:33.315
We're called to extend grace to others while standing firm in God's truth.
00:07:33.315 --> 00:07:39.158
It's not always that easy, but it's the example Jesus has set for us to follow.
00:07:39.584 --> 00:07:42.555
Yeah, that's why Christmas is so much more than a holiday.
00:07:42.555 --> 00:07:46.596
It's a reminder of who Jesus is and what he came to do.
00:07:46.596 --> 00:07:51.336
The Word became flesh so that we could be reconciled to God.
00:07:53.125 --> 00:07:56.326
So, Rick, let's talk about what this means for us today.
00:07:56.326 --> 00:08:01.168
If Jesus is the Word made flesh, how should that change the way we live?
00:08:01.189 --> 00:08:02.749
So, Rick, let's talk about what this means for us today.
00:08:02.749 --> 00:08:04.430
If Jesus is the Word made flesh, how should that change the way we live?
00:08:04.430 --> 00:08:08.591
Well, I think it starts with recognizing the authority of Jesus and His Word.
00:08:08.591 --> 00:08:14.954
If he's the Word, then everything he said and did carries eternal significance.
00:08:14.954 --> 00:08:17.875
His teachings aren't just good advice.
00:08:17.875 --> 00:08:21.098
They're the foundation for how we're called to live.
00:08:21.937 --> 00:08:25.699
Yeah, and that means we need to stay rooted in the scripture that we read.
00:08:25.699 --> 00:08:29.161
If we want to know Jesus, we have to know his word Right.
00:08:29.161 --> 00:08:31.862
The Bible isn't just a book we read on Sundays.
00:08:32.222 --> 00:08:36.888
It's living and active pointing us to Christ every single day of our lives.
00:08:36.888 --> 00:08:40.878
That is so true, and I think it also means living in a way that reflects his character.
00:08:40.878 --> 00:08:49.489
Right, jesus came full of grace and truth, so we're called to show grace to others while holding fast to God's truth.
00:08:50.471 --> 00:08:52.797
Right, and that's such an important point as well.
00:08:52.797 --> 00:08:57.797
Especially during this Christmas season, we have so many opportunities to reflect Jesus.
00:08:57.797 --> 00:09:07.034
Whether it's through simple acts of kindness, sharing the gospel or simply being a light in our communities, we can show others what it means to live for Christ.
00:09:07.865 --> 00:09:11.034
Yeah, and let's not forget the hope that comes with knowing Jesus.
00:09:11.034 --> 00:09:14.615
The Word became flesh so that we could have eternal life.
00:09:14.615 --> 00:09:20.216
No matter what we're going through, we can find peace in the fact that God is with us.
00:09:20.216 --> 00:09:21.619
Emmanuel.
00:09:22.726 --> 00:09:24.472
And that's the beauty of Christmas, isn't it?
00:09:24.472 --> 00:09:37.626
It's not just a celebration of His birth, it's a celebration of His presence in our lives, and as we look forward to His return, we can live with joy and purpose, knowing that he's coming back as king.
00:09:37.706 --> 00:09:38.567
Praise God.
00:09:38.567 --> 00:09:46.527
Jesus is the word made flesh, full of grace and truth, and as we celebrate this season, let's make it our favorite.
00:09:46.527 --> 00:09:47.427
Co-host Lauren.
00:10:09.245 --> 00:10:15.712
This family had a tradition where the mother and children would go to the Christmas Eve service and the father would stay home and read the paper.
00:10:15.712 --> 00:10:20.196
When the family returns home from church they would all gather to open up their presents.
00:10:20.196 --> 00:10:28.312
The father was not an evil man, but he just couldn't believe in the childhood stories anymore of God coming as a baby in a manger.
00:10:28.312 --> 00:10:33.609
As the family left for church, he opened up the evening paper and began to read by the fireplace.
00:10:33.609 --> 00:10:36.395
Suddenly he heard tapping on the window.
00:10:36.395 --> 00:10:43.870
It was a bird flying against the glass of his window, trying to get out of the snow into the warmth of his home.
00:10:43.870 --> 00:10:46.538
The man had compassion on the bird and he went outside hoping to bring it in.
00:10:46.538 --> 00:10:50.594
As he approached the bird, the bird just flew against the window even harder.
00:10:50.995 --> 00:10:56.932
Pretty soon the bird flew into the bushes below the window, half frozen, yet too afraid to be caught by this huge man.
00:10:56.932 --> 00:11:03.070
The more the man tried to reach for the bird, the more the bird flew frantically into the snow and thorns of the bushes.
00:11:03.070 --> 00:11:12.217
After a few minutes in the cold and seeing the bird continue to injure itself, the man yelled out in frustration stupid bird, can't you understand that I'm trying to help.
00:11:12.217 --> 00:11:17.014
The man paused and thought if only you understood, you wouldn't fly away.
00:11:17.014 --> 00:11:22.054
If only, if only I could become a bird and get you to understand.
00:11:22.054 --> 00:11:26.174
Just then the church bells rang, as they always have on the hour.
00:11:26.174 --> 00:11:33.011
But when the man heard the bells this time, he fell to his knees and began to cry, saying oh God, I didn't understand.
00:11:33.011 --> 00:11:35.292
Oh God, I didn't understand.
00:11:35.292 --> 00:11:44.076
God's Son came in human form that we might understand from where we have come, for what reason we were separated and how we could be restored to God.
00:11:46.725 --> 00:11:52.134
In a fast-paced world, with noise and distractions, it can be hard to find moments of peace and clarity.
00:11:52.134 --> 00:12:04.668

00:12:35.423 --> 00:12:42.226
Wisdom for the Day, because a little wisdom goes a long way.
00:12:42.226 --> 00:12:48.274
Earlier we talked about John 1.14, and I'll read it again.
00:12:48.274 --> 00:12:59.446
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen His glory, glory as of the only Son of the Father, full of grace and truth.
00:12:59.446 --> 00:13:05.948
Now this verse we witness the Creator of all things, taken on human form and living among us.
00:13:05.948 --> 00:13:17.615
The Greek word for dwelt is skinu, which means tabernacled, so the passage really reads the Word of God became flesh and tabernacled among us.
00:13:17.615 --> 00:13:19.076
Now.
00:13:19.115 --> 00:13:23.458
The term tabernacle should resonate with anybody that's familiar with the Old Testament.
00:13:23.458 --> 00:13:31.143
The tabernacle was a portable sanctuary constructed for God to dwell among his people Exodus 25.8,.
00:13:31.143 --> 00:13:42.798
As they journeyed towards the Promised Land in Canaan, it was basically just a large tent set up in the camp where the Lord's presence would reside.
00:13:42.798 --> 00:13:53.674
Now, after delivering his people from slavery in Egypt, god dwelled with them in the tabernacle, a temporary dwelling place as they wandered through the wilderness.
00:13:53.674 --> 00:14:05.496
Now, during that time, a cloud would cover the tent and the Lord's glory would fill that tabernacle, and when the cloud lifted, the Israelites would break camp and set out on their journey.
00:14:05.496 --> 00:14:09.735
Now, god, god wasn't distant from his people.
00:14:09.735 --> 00:14:14.456
He intimately involved himself in their journey.
00:14:14.456 --> 00:14:17.634
He guided them every step of the way.
00:14:19.322 --> 00:14:24.533
The John draws a parallel between the Old Testament tabernacle and Jesus.
00:14:24.533 --> 00:14:32.214
The God who tabernacled among his people in the tent now tabernacles among us in the flesh.
00:14:32.214 --> 00:14:38.673
The divine presence that dwelt in the tabernacle now dwells in Jesus Christ.
00:14:38.673 --> 00:14:50.028
God's always been close to his people, even in their most challenging times of wandering around in the desert full of uncertainty, he was with them in the wilderness.
00:14:50.028 --> 00:14:52.628
He was guiding them, he was protecting them.
00:14:52.628 --> 00:15:03.154
And now, in the incarnation, we see God drawing in even more, in a profound way.
00:15:03.154 --> 00:15:08.171
In Jesus, god is with us in a tangible, personal form.
00:15:10.100 --> 00:15:23.474
During this Christmas season, we celebrate the incredible reality the almighty, transcendent creator pursued his people by becoming one of us.
00:15:23.474 --> 00:15:35.802
The manger holds the preexistent one who entered into time, the eternal word made flesh With the birth of Jesus.
00:15:35.802 --> 00:15:42.811
We see God's ultimate act of love and grace dwelling among us to bring us salvation and grace dwelling among us to bring us salvation.
00:15:42.811 --> 00:15:54.264
This season reminds us that God is not distant, but he's intimately involved in our lives, offering us his presence and guidance and love.
00:15:54.264 --> 00:16:04.677
So, as we reflect on John 1.14, let's remember the continuity of God's presence from the tabernacle to the incarnation.
00:16:04.677 --> 00:16:11.754
Let's celebrate the God who's come near, who dwells with us and who leads us through every season of life.
00:16:11.754 --> 00:16:22.763
Now, as we wrap up today, I hope that the discussion has encouraged you to think about the true meaning of Christmas.
00:16:22.763 --> 00:16:31.005
Jesus is the Word made flesh, the fulfillment of God's promises and the ultimate expression of His love.
00:16:32.226 --> 00:16:41.009
Yes, and as we celebrate this season, let's make it a priority to spend time in the Word, reflect on His grace and truth, and share His love with those around us.
00:16:41.250 --> 00:16:50.974
Amen to that, lauren, and I want to thank you again for joining me today, and thank you all for listening, and we'll see you next time on Renewed Mindsets.
00:16:50.974 --> 00:16:57.116
Until then, merry Christmas, and may the word of God dwell richly in your hearts.
00:16:57.116 --> 00:16:59.597
We love you, see ya.
00:17:00.697 --> 00:17:01.258
Merry Christmas.
00:17:04.701 --> 00:17:04.801
Bye.
00:17:04.801 --> 00:17:06.903
Well, that's all for this week's show.
00:17:06.903 --> 00:17:10.605
You know the name of this show speaks my hope for you.
00:17:10.605 --> 00:17:14.489
It's taken from the words of Romans, chapter 12, verse 2.
00:17:14.489 --> 00:17:30.162
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Nobody's walking out on this fun old-fashioned family Christmas.
00:18:58.130 --> 00:19:00.628
No, no, we're all in this together.
00:19:00.628 --> 00:19:03.588
This is a full-blown four-alarm holiday emergency.
00:19:03.588 --> 00:19:09.272
Here we're gonna press on and we're gonna have the hap-hap-happiest Christmas since Bing Crosby tap-danced with Danny.
