Let me know what you think of these bonus episodes.

00:00:25.329 --> 00:00:27.132
So now we know what a fast is.

00:00:27.132 --> 00:00:29.187
We kind of know how to do a fast.

00:00:29.187 --> 00:00:31.527
But what is the purpose of fasting?

00:00:31.527 --> 00:00:34.308
It's more than just food abstinence.

00:00:34.308 --> 00:00:36.908
It requires a special purpose.

00:00:36.908 --> 00:00:40.326
I've got one.

00:00:40.326 --> 00:00:43.548
I've got a special purpose.

00:00:43.548 --> 00:00:46.628
Without a purpose, fasting can be miserable.

00:00:46.628 --> 00:00:50.210
It's a self-centered experience about willpower and endurance.

00:00:50.210 --> 00:00:59.552
Purpose is extremely important Because, as you feel hungry, it should bring you a regular reminder of the purpose of the fast.

00:00:59.552 --> 00:01:07.433
So, really, the biggest purpose of fasting is to strengthen prayer.

00:01:08.600 --> 00:01:15.189
People of God have used fasting when there was an urgency in their prayer regarding the concern that they're bringing before God.

00:01:15.189 --> 00:01:24.209
When Ezra was going to lead the group of exiles back to Jerusalem, he proclaimed a fast in order for the people to seek the Lord for safe passage.

00:01:24.209 --> 00:01:29.790
They'd have to face many dangers on the 900-mile trip and they didn't have any military protection.

00:01:29.790 --> 00:01:30.992
They were vulnerable.

00:01:30.992 --> 00:01:33.944
It says in Ezra 8.23,.

00:01:33.944 --> 00:01:38.453
So we fasted and implored our God for this and he listened to our entreaty.

00:01:38.453 --> 00:01:49.088
It's not that fasting compels God to do what we want, but if we're asking for things outside of God's will, then fasting is not going to cause him to reconsider.

00:01:49.088 --> 00:01:55.552
It isn't meant to change God's hearing as much as it is to change our praying.

00:01:56.819 --> 00:01:59.829
Biblical fasting is God's idea.

00:01:59.829 --> 00:02:04.483
When we need to strengthen our prayers, god says to apply fasting.

00:02:04.483 --> 00:02:07.186
When we need to strengthen our prayers, god says to apply fasting.

00:02:07.186 --> 00:02:11.028
It brings more intensity and an urgency to our spiritual desire.

00:02:11.028 --> 00:02:21.276
Now we see prayer coupled with fasting in Nehemiah 1, verse 4, where it says Nehemiah continued fasting and praying before the Lord of God in heaven.

00:02:21.276 --> 00:02:29.485
And in Daniel 9, verse 3, it says that Daniel pleaded with God by prayers and pleas for mercy with fasting.

00:02:29.485 --> 00:02:38.412
And in Acts 13, chapter 3, the church at Antioch laid hands on Barnabas and Saul to send them on their missionary journey after fasting and praying.

00:02:38.412 --> 00:02:46.212
In Scripture, fasting to strengthen prayer is most emphasized Now they're often coupled together.

00:02:47.300 --> 00:02:51.532
When you look at all the other biblical reasons to fast in one way or another, they all relate to prayer.

00:02:51.532 --> 00:02:56.550
Fasting is one of the best things we can do to bring prayer into our lives.

00:02:56.550 --> 00:03:01.122
Another way to use fasting is to seek God's guidance.

00:03:01.122 --> 00:03:06.889
Seek God's guidance so to try to gain a clear understanding of God's will.

00:03:06.889 --> 00:03:22.997
You would fast In Acts, chapter 14, when Paul and Barnabas would appoint elders in the churches that they founded, the first thing they did was prayed and fasted to receive God's guidance.

00:03:22.997 --> 00:03:34.319
Now, while fasting doesn't guarantee a clear and direct guidance, when it's practiced correctly it does make us more receptive to the God who loves to guide us in what we do.

00:03:37.048 --> 00:03:39.818
People also fast to express grief.

00:03:39.818 --> 00:03:55.991
There's four references to fasting in the Bible that's connected to grief, and when King Saul was trying to kill David, saul's son Jonathan responded with "'Ate no food on the second day of the month, for he grieved for David'".

00:03:55.991 --> 00:03:58.699
That's in 1 Samuel, chapter 20.

00:03:58.699 --> 00:03:59.246
Right.

00:03:59.246 --> 00:04:05.567
Another reason to fast is to seek deliverance or protection.

00:04:05.567 --> 00:04:16.843
It's very common in the biblical times for them to fast seeking salvation from an enemy or some circumstance, and there's no reason that we can't do it now.

00:04:16.843 --> 00:04:24.668
You know, fasting, rather than reacting in the flesh, should be one of the first defenses against persecution from people in the world due to our faith.

00:04:24.668 --> 00:04:27.572
Flesh should be one of the first defenses against persecution from people in the world due to our faith.

00:04:27.572 --> 00:04:36.170
We might desire to strike back with anger or verbal abuse and we might even have anxiety about it, but we can appeal to God first for protection and deliverance.

00:04:37.252 --> 00:04:42.461
Another biblical reason to fast is to express repentance and a return to God.

00:04:42.461 --> 00:04:50.170
If you look at Joel 2, verse 12, it's kind of the same as expressing grief over sin.

00:04:50.170 --> 00:04:58.245
But repentance is a change of mind resulting in a change of action, and fasting can represent more than just grief over sin.

00:04:58.245 --> 00:05:06.209
It can be a sign of a commitment to obedience to God, of a commitment to obedience to God.

00:05:06.209 --> 00:05:12.932
In Joel 2.12, the Lord specifically calls the people to repent and to return to him by fasting.

00:05:12.932 --> 00:05:18.644
It says Even now declares the Lord return to me with all your heart and with fasting and weeping and mourning.

00:05:18.644 --> 00:05:23.985
Really, without repentance, fasting can be done in vain.

00:05:23.985 --> 00:05:30.148
If we're hardening our hearts to God's call to deal with specific sin in our life, it can be pointless.

00:05:30.148 --> 00:05:37.088
We need to be sensitive to God's conviction by the Holy Spirit and not pervert fasting by holding on to sin in our lives.

00:05:37.088 --> 00:05:38.961
I mean, why go through all that?

00:05:41.036 --> 00:05:47.928
Another biblical reason to fast is to humble ourselves before God and to express concern for the work of God.

00:05:47.928 --> 00:05:53.887
Now there might be a desire to fast and pray for the work of God in a place that needs his help.

00:05:53.887 --> 00:06:05.086
That was the purpose of Nehemiah's fast when he first heard that, despite of the many returning Jews from exile to Jerusalem, the city still had no wall to defend it.

00:06:05.086 --> 00:06:18.487
And it says they said to me, the remnant there in the province who survived the captivity are in great distress and reproach and the wall of Jerusalem is broken down and its gates are burned with fire.

00:06:18.487 --> 00:06:26.055
And when I heard these words I sat down and wept and mourned for days and I was fasting and praying before the God of heaven.

00:06:26.055 --> 00:06:31.363
Fasting and praying before the God of heaven.

00:06:31.363 --> 00:06:36.798
We should be fasting in our desire to minister to the needs of others.

00:06:36.798 --> 00:06:45.206
I mean that kind of fasting is the kind that pleases God, because it results in concern for others and not just for ourselves.

00:06:45.206 --> 00:06:57.687
We can fast with the spiritual purpose of ministering to other people and we can fast to overcome temptation and a fast to dedicate yourself to God.

00:06:58.995 --> 00:07:12.141
In Matthew 4, 1 through 11, jesus is coming off of a 40-day fast to prepare himself for the public ministry and he was about to begin In the spiritual strength of that long fast.

00:07:12.141 --> 00:07:19.444
He was prepared to overcome the temptations of Satan, and the devil tempted him in so many different ways.

00:07:19.444 --> 00:07:31.630
Now, that passage has more to do with declaring who Jesus is rather than fasting, but there's something for us to learn there about his unique experience in fasting.

00:07:31.630 --> 00:07:39.848
Fasting was a way of overcoming temptation and of freshly dedicating ourselves to the Father.

00:07:39.848 --> 00:07:49.964
And sometimes we struggle with temptation or we anticipate a struggle to come, and we know that we need extra spiritual strength to overcome it.

00:07:49.964 --> 00:07:59.206
And, depending on your situation, it may be beneficial to fast for the purpose of overcoming temptation and for renewing your dedication to the Lord.

00:07:59.206 --> 00:08:07.023
And finally, we should just fast to express our love and our worship to God.

00:08:09.091 --> 00:08:12.701
Fasting is not just meant for tough circumstances and trouble.

00:08:12.701 --> 00:08:17.622
It can be purely an expression of love and devotion to God.

00:08:17.622 --> 00:08:25.081
It's a way to demonstrate that you love God more than food and that seeking Him is more important than eating.

00:08:25.081 --> 00:08:28.959
It's a reminder that our stomach is not our God.

00:08:28.959 --> 00:08:33.321
We desire spiritual bread more than physical, because we love God.

00:08:33.321 --> 00:08:37.780
What we hunger for most we worship.

00:08:37.780 --> 00:08:45.557
Think about that what you hunger for the most is what you worship.

00:08:47.159 --> 00:08:51.875
In Luke, chapter 2, verse 37, we read about an unforgettable woman named Anna.

00:08:51.875 --> 00:08:57.835
It says that she did not depart from the temple worshiping with fasting and prayer, night and day.

00:08:57.835 --> 00:08:59.438
It was an act of worship.

00:08:59.438 --> 00:09:10.823
We can take time away from food to devote time to praise and worship God and, regardless of the purpose of our fast, it's all about God.

00:09:10.823 --> 00:09:43.330
On each fast, seeking God should be the first and most important thing that you should be doing it, for Fasting is when we hunger for God, for a fresh encounter with Him, for God to answer a prayer, for God to save someone, for God to work powerfully in our church, for God to guide us or protect us, more than we hunger for the food that God made us to live on.

00:09:43.330 --> 00:09:55.341
Just remember, before you fast, you must have a purpose, a biblical, god-centered purpose, and if you knew what God knew, you would give yourself to the identical blessing that he does.

00:09:55.341 --> 00:09:58.317
None of His rewards are worthless.

00:09:58.317 --> 00:10:00.414
Take a look at your life.

00:10:00.414 --> 00:10:03.238
There's something that you could be fasting for.

00:10:03.238 --> 00:10:06.436
There's a purpose for your fast.

00:10:09.341 --> 00:10:19.972
Hey, you don't know how much I appreciate you listening to this podcast, and if you're listening and you're regular, do you know that I have a second podcast?

00:10:19.972 --> 00:10:22.386
It's called Wisdom for the Day.

00:10:22.386 --> 00:10:27.129
You can find it at wisdomforthedayorg or right here.

00:10:27.129 --> 00:10:31.727
Wherever you're listening to this podcast, just do a search for Wisdom for the Day.

00:10:31.727 --> 00:10:36.860
It's basically a daily podcast from the book of Proverbs.

00:10:38.043 --> 00:10:42.731
I read about two verses a day and do a deep dive on those two verses.

00:10:42.731 --> 00:10:52.128
Now, when you say deep dive on two verses, it's only going to be about five or six minutes, so you don't have to devote your whole life to another podcast.

00:10:52.128 --> 00:11:02.768
As much as I appreciate you listening to this one, I really want you to listen to the next one and I don't want to take up all your time, so give me five minutes.

00:11:02.768 --> 00:11:05.140
You can listen to that while you're shaving.

00:11:05.140 --> 00:11:10.062
You can listen to it when you first get in the car and waiting for it to warm up or cool off.

00:11:10.062 --> 00:11:14.552
I guess now, since it's going to be summer, I'd appreciate it.

00:11:14.552 --> 00:11:17.725
If you like it, let somebody else know about it too.

00:11:17.725 --> 00:11:20.769
That's wisdomforthedayorg.

00:11:20.769 --> 00:11:23.634
I love you, see ya.
