Send us a text

What if life's storms, from financial upheaval to personal health battles, are not just obstacles but opportunities to strengthen your faith? Join Rick on a thought-provoking journey where we confront life's unpredictable challenges using the timeless wisdom of biblical teachings. Together, we'll uncover how spiritual preparation can be as crucial as stocking up for a physical winter storm. By reflecting on passages like John 16:33 and Matthew 7:24-27, we emphasize the importance of laying a solid foundation built on God's Word. Through prayer, scripture, and the power of community, we'll explore how to transform fear into faith, trusting in God's sovereignty as we navigate through life's most turbulent times.

As we continue this exploration, we'll delve into the transformative power of mindset renewal, inspired by Romans 12:2. Discover how changing your mindset can help you discern what is truly good and acceptable, leading to a life more aligned with spiritual truth. I invite you to engage with our community—share the podcast, explore past episodes on renewedmindsets.com, and leave feedback that could be featured in future episodes. 00:00:01.985 --> 00:00:03.710
Coming up on Renewed Mindsets.

00:00:03.710 --> 00:00:07.830
Life can feel a lot like sailing across the ocean.

00:00:07.830 --> 00:00:16.065
Sometimes everything's peaceful, the water's calm, the sky is bright, but sooner or later the storm shows up.

00:00:16.065 --> 00:00:21.448
They're unpredictable, they're overwhelming and they can knock you off course.

00:00:21.448 --> 00:00:25.327
How we handle those storms makes all the difference.

00:00:25.327 --> 00:00:31.172
It's what decides if we come out stronger or end up feeling completely lost.

00:00:31.172 --> 00:00:34.060
Let's talk about that.

00:00:34.060 --> 00:00:37.110
Let's go, boys.

00:00:37.110 --> 00:00:50.649
Hey, welcome to Renewed Mindsets, bringing you God's truth from a Gen X perspective, with a mix of humor and a dash of nostalgia.

00:00:50.649 --> 00:00:54.511
Remember when life was simpler and all we needed was a good mixtape.

00:00:54.511 --> 00:00:57.960
Well, we're here to make your spiritual playlist even better.

00:00:57.960 --> 00:01:04.373
Join us as we explore scripture, laugh a little and rediscover the power of a renewed mindset.

00:01:04.373 --> 00:01:07.069
Don't conform transform.

00:01:07.069 --> 00:01:18.805
Welcome back to Renewed Mindsets, where we explore how God's Word transforms our lives and equips us to handle life's storms.

00:01:18.805 --> 00:01:21.552
I'm Rick and I'm so glad you're here.

00:01:22.459 --> 00:01:28.064
Today we're going to be tackling a topic we all face unexpected events and trials.

00:01:28.064 --> 00:01:34.722
Now, right here in the South, as I speak, we're preparing for a severe winter storm.

00:01:34.722 --> 00:01:39.332
I'm not even sure if this podcast episode is going to get uploaded or not.

00:01:39.332 --> 00:01:45.593
That storm, to me, is a reminder of how life can be so unpredictable.

00:01:45.593 --> 00:01:48.287
You might be dealing with your own storm.

00:01:48.287 --> 00:01:54.112
It might be a financial crisis or some health issue or a family struggle.

00:01:54.112 --> 00:02:02.370
Whatever form it takes, these challenges test our resilience but, more importantly, they reveal our foundation.

00:02:02.370 --> 00:02:16.412
Today we're going to talk about how to prepare for life's storms and how to stand firm during them, right and trust that God's purpose is in the midst of all of it.

00:02:18.001 --> 00:02:20.808
Section 1, the Nature of Life's Storms.

00:02:20.808 --> 00:02:21.555
So life's storms come in many forms.

00:02:21.555 --> 00:02:32.287
Life's storms, so life's storms come in many forms Losing a job, sudden illness, a broken relationship, even a global crisis.

00:02:32.287 --> 00:02:36.411
Storms can be unexplained.

00:02:36.411 --> 00:02:41.056
They disrupt our routines, they mess up our plans.

00:02:41.056 --> 00:02:50.687
But Jesus warned us in John 16, 33, in this world you're going to have trouble, but take heart, I've overcome the world.

00:02:50.687 --> 00:02:54.960
Trouble isn't an option, it's a guarantee.

00:02:56.421 --> 00:03:08.242
But let's look at Matthew, chapter 7, specifically 24 through 27, where Jesus tells the story of the two builders, one built on the rock, the other built on sand.

00:03:08.242 --> 00:03:15.275
Both experienced the same storm, but the outcome was vastly different.

00:03:15.275 --> 00:03:23.248
The house on the rock stood firm, while the house on the sand fell with a great crash on the sand fell with a great crash.

00:03:23.248 --> 00:03:24.411
Now what's that rock?

00:03:24.411 --> 00:03:26.372
What's the rock?

00:03:26.372 --> 00:03:37.001
It's God's Word, people, it's His truth, it's His promises.

00:03:37.001 --> 00:03:40.725
Building our lives on the rock means living according to God's teachings and trusting Him as our foundation.

00:03:41.606 --> 00:03:46.272
When these storms come, they expose the foundation of our lives.

00:03:46.272 --> 00:03:59.925
Are we relying on Christ, or are we placing our trust in things that can be easily shaken, like our finances or our achievements, or in a relationship?

00:03:59.925 --> 00:04:02.868
Let's bring this closer to home.

00:04:02.868 --> 00:04:06.114
Let's talk about this winter storm Now.

00:04:06.114 --> 00:04:11.412
We've known that it's been coming for days and there's people rushing to prepare.

00:04:11.412 --> 00:04:19.915
I say that because I spent the last two hours driving around the state looking for propane, or else I'd have no heat.

00:04:19.915 --> 00:04:37.454
Now imagine if we treated our spiritual lives like these people that are rushing to prepare that didn't plan for a storm in January, so they didn't have enough propane Big dummy.

00:04:37.454 --> 00:04:43.357
Are we spiritually prepared for those storms that we know we're going to face?

00:04:43.357 --> 00:04:47.206
Yes Right, storms are equalizers.

00:04:47.206 --> 00:04:51.413
It doesn't matter who you are Rich or poor, young or old.

00:04:51.413 --> 00:04:53.264
They're going to affect everybody.

00:04:53.264 --> 00:04:57.892
But our response rooted in faith makes all the difference.

00:04:57.892 --> 00:05:05.153
When we trust God, we don't just survive storms, we grow through them.

00:05:06.120 --> 00:05:08.038
Section 2, preparing for Life's Storms Row through them.

00:05:08.038 --> 00:05:08.319
Section 2.

00:05:08.319 --> 00:05:11.994
Preparing for life's storms.

00:05:11.994 --> 00:05:13.081
Now, preparation is the key.

00:05:13.081 --> 00:05:25.704
But now, ladies and gentlemen, we finally have a working tractor beam, which we shall call Preparation H, forgive me.

00:05:27.259 --> 00:05:31.252
Preparation is the key, both physically and spiritually.

00:05:31.252 --> 00:05:40.050
Just like you'd stock up on food and water and batteries for the winter storm, you need to equip yourself spiritually for life's challenges.

00:05:40.050 --> 00:05:41.845
But how do we do that?

00:05:41.845 --> 00:05:44.406
Well, first, let's talk about prayer.

00:05:44.406 --> 00:05:47.608
Prayer is our lifeline to God.

00:05:47.608 --> 00:06:08.951
Philippians, chapter 4, and 7 tells us Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your request to God, and the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds.

00:06:08.951 --> 00:06:09.891
In Christ Jesus.

00:06:09.891 --> 00:06:11.535
It's that simple.

00:06:12.720 --> 00:06:19.374
When we face these potential storms, prayer prepares our hearts to trust in God's sovereignty.

00:06:19.374 --> 00:06:22.910
It shifts our focus from fear to faith.

00:06:22.910 --> 00:06:27.069
Second, we need to be grounded in Scripture.

00:06:27.069 --> 00:06:33.470
Psalm 119.105 says your word is a lamp unto my feet and a light to my path.

00:06:33.470 --> 00:06:37.689
God's word guides us when we can't see the way forward.

00:06:37.689 --> 00:06:42.290
It equips us with promises that we can hold on to in tough times.

00:06:43.821 --> 00:06:45.728
Another essential is community.

00:06:45.728 --> 00:06:56.773
Ecclesiastes 4.9 10 reminds us that two are better than one because they have a good return for their labor If either one of them falls, one can help the other one up.

00:06:56.773 --> 00:07:02.211
So surround yourself with believers who can encourage you and pray with you.

00:07:02.211 --> 00:07:10.387
And finally, preparation means trusting God to be our refuge, psalm 46.1,.

00:07:10.387 --> 00:07:16.035
God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.

00:07:16.035 --> 00:07:25.791
Before that storm hits, decide to run to God, not away from him Now.

00:07:25.831 --> 00:07:31.822
Practical steps also matter Now for this storm that's coming up.

00:07:31.822 --> 00:07:37.031
People are preparing their homes, they're checking their heat, they're protecting their pipes, they're stocking up on supplies.

00:07:37.031 --> 00:07:40.543
Spiritually, we should be doing the same thing.

00:07:40.543 --> 00:07:44.853
Are we taking time to invest in our relationship with God?

00:07:44.853 --> 00:07:51.612
Are we practicing spiritual disciplines that are going to sustain us during these trials?

00:07:51.612 --> 00:07:54.944
Section 3.

00:07:54.944 --> 00:07:57.490
Finding Hope Amidst Trials.

00:07:59.824 --> 00:08:05.394
Now, when these trials hit, our immediate reaction a lot of times is fear and frustration.

00:08:05.394 --> 00:08:06.862
That's normal.

00:08:06.862 --> 00:08:11.033
But as believers, we're called to respond differently.

00:08:11.033 --> 00:08:27.470
James, chapter 1, verses 2 through 4, says Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance, produces perseverance.

00:08:27.470 --> 00:08:30.274
Now, pure joy doesn't mean pretending to be happy.

00:08:30.274 --> 00:08:41.042
It means recognizing that God is at work in the storm, refining us and building our character.

00:08:41.062 --> 00:08:42.523
Now let me share a little story.

00:08:42.523 --> 00:08:45.884
You know I like stories and this is actually a story of mine.

00:08:45.884 --> 00:08:52.951
A few years ago, during another winter storm, my family and I lost power for about a week Now.

00:08:52.951 --> 00:08:54.471
At first it was chaos.

00:08:54.471 --> 00:08:59.135
We were cold, we were uncomfortable, we were frustrated.

00:08:59.135 --> 00:09:00.976
We were in each other's way.

00:09:00.976 --> 00:09:05.562
But something unexpected happened.

00:09:05.562 --> 00:09:14.375
Without electricity or distractions, we spent time praying together, talking and reflecting on God's provision.

00:09:14.375 --> 00:09:18.669
Now, what felt like a trial turned into a blessing.

00:09:18.669 --> 00:09:22.288
Now that reminds me of Joseph in the Bible.

00:09:22.288 --> 00:09:26.551
He was sold into slavery and later he was imprisoned.

00:09:26.551 --> 00:09:43.225
Joseph endured incredible trials, but in Genesis, chapter 50, verse 20, he tells his brothers you intended to harm me, but God intended it for good, to accomplish what is now being done the saving of many lives.

00:09:44.527 --> 00:09:46.690
God uses trials to grow us.

00:09:46.690 --> 00:09:50.615
God uses trials to grow us, but he also uses them to impact others.

00:09:50.615 --> 00:09:57.903
When we respond with faith and hope, we become witnesses to his goodness.

00:09:57.903 --> 00:10:02.231
People notice when we have a peace in the middle of a whole bunch of chaos.

00:10:02.231 --> 00:10:09.107
They do Remember the storms don't last forever.

00:10:09.107 --> 00:10:21.539
Psalm 30, verse 5, reminds us Weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.

00:10:21.539 --> 00:10:23.720
Hold on to hope, knowing that God is working for your good.

00:10:24.903 --> 00:10:25.686
Section 4.

00:10:25.686 --> 00:10:27.750
Trusting God's Sovereignty.

00:10:27.750 --> 00:10:36.654
Trusting God's sovereignty means believing that he is in control even when life feels out of control.

00:10:36.654 --> 00:10:41.969
Proverbs 3, verses 5 and 6.

00:10:41.969 --> 00:10:48.812
It says Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.

00:10:48.812 --> 00:10:56.448
Sometimes we try to understand why things happen, but God doesn't always give us answers.

00:10:56.448 --> 00:11:01.783
Instead, he gives us his presence and his promises.

00:11:03.565 --> 00:11:04.206
Look at Job.

00:11:04.206 --> 00:11:09.230
Job faced horrible and unimaginable loss.

00:11:09.230 --> 00:11:16.904
Yet in Job 19, verse 25, he says I know that my Redeemer lives.

00:11:16.904 --> 00:11:22.293
Job trusted God's goodness even when he didn't understand his plan.

00:11:22.293 --> 00:11:27.606
Another example of that is Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane.

00:11:27.606 --> 00:11:38.750
He was facing the cross and he prayed Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me, yet not my will, but yours be done.

00:11:38.750 --> 00:11:41.086
That's Luke 22, 42.

00:11:41.086 --> 00:11:46.826
Jesus modeled ultimate trust in God's plan.

00:11:48.989 --> 00:11:54.495
When we trust in God's sovereignty, we release the need to control everything.

00:11:54.495 --> 00:11:59.071
We acknowledge that His ways are higher than our ways.

00:11:59.071 --> 00:12:13.070
This doesn't mean that the storms won't hurt Trust me they will but it means that we can have peace, knowing that God is with us and he's working for our good.

00:12:13.070 --> 00:12:23.230
Now, as we prepare for this winter storm, let's also prepare our hearts for life's storms.

00:12:23.230 --> 00:12:34.211
Anchor yourself in Christ, trust his sovereignty and remember that trials are opportunities to grow closer to God and witness to other people.

00:12:35.452 --> 00:12:38.344
Take some time, do that.

00:12:38.344 --> 00:12:43.090
Take some time, yeah, take some time to reflect on your past trials.

00:12:43.090 --> 00:12:46.928
How has God shown his faithfulness in those moments?

00:12:46.928 --> 00:12:47.410
Share those stories.

00:12:47.410 --> 00:12:48.696
They could be a source of encouragement to somebody else.

00:12:48.696 --> 00:12:49.820
How has God shown his faithfulness in those moments?

00:12:49.820 --> 00:12:53.557
Share those stories.

00:12:53.557 --> 00:12:55.364
They could be a source of encouragement to somebody else.

00:12:55.364 --> 00:12:56.306
Thank you, thank you.

00:12:56.385 --> 00:12:59.231
Thank you for joining me today on Renewed Mindsets.

00:12:59.231 --> 00:13:17.514
Stay safe, stay warm and stay grounded in God's Word Until next time.

00:13:17.514 --> 00:13:19.639
Keep renewing your mind and trusting in God's promises.

00:13:19.639 --> 00:13:25.179
And now some dad jokes to help you weather that storm.

00:13:25.179 --> 00:13:28.212
Why did the snowman go to the doctor?

00:13:28.212 --> 00:13:31.091
He was getting chills.

00:13:31.091 --> 00:13:35.639
Why is Frosty always early?

00:13:35.639 --> 00:13:39.700
Because time waits for snowman, sorry.

00:13:44.182 --> 00:13:46.245
Well, that's all for this week's show.

00:13:46.245 --> 00:13:49.927
You know the name of this show speaks my hope for you.

00:13:49.927 --> 00:13:53.809
It's taken from the words of Romans, chapter 12, verse 2.

00:13:53.809 --> 00:14:10.182
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

00:14:10.182 --> 00:14:15.528
If you enjoyed what you heard, do me a favor, please and tell someone you know about it.

00:14:15.528 --> 00:14:22.897
Send them a link in a text you know you may even need to download it to their phone and show them what a podcast is.

00:14:22.897 --> 00:14:26.931
If it was valuable to you, it will be to them.

00:14:26.931 --> 00:14:29.424
If it was valuable to you, it will be to them.

00:14:29.424 --> 00:14:43.208

00:14:45.971 --> 00:14:49.174
I just might play it on a future episode.

00:14:49.174 --> 00:14:58.379
Until next week, I'm Rick.

00:14:58.379 --> 00:15:08.354
I love you.

00:15:08.354 --> 00:15:08.914
See, ya.

00:15:15.480 --> 00:15:17.764
The intro and outro music for the Renewed Mindsets podcast is Are you Ready?

00:15:17.764 --> 00:15:18.725
