00:00:00.600 --> 00:00:02.403
Coming up on Renewed Mindsets.
00:00:02.403 --> 00:00:12.893
As the Christmas season approaches, many of us find joy in decorating trees, hanging mistletoe and celebrating the arrival of Santa Claus.
00:00:12.893 --> 00:00:17.692
These traditions have become deeply ingrained in our holiday celebrations.
00:00:17.692 --> 00:00:28.306
They're often as viewed as harmless fun, but today we're going to take a closer look at these beloved customs and ask the crucial question what does God think about them?
00:00:28.306 --> 00:00:30.545
Let's go, boys.
00:00:30.545 --> 00:00:43.335
Hey, welcome to Renewed Mindsets, where we study the basics of the faith through the lens of our middle-aged experiences.
00:00:43.335 --> 00:00:46.904
Basics of the faith through the lens of our middle-aged experiences.
00:00:46.904 --> 00:00:47.164
I'm Rick.
00:00:47.164 --> 00:00:55.801
Welcome to the show where I help you, gen Xers and Millennials, navigate spiritually through a world that looks nothing like we expected back when cars were square and mullets were totally awesome.
00:00:55.801 --> 00:00:57.921
I am so glad you're here.
00:00:57.921 --> 00:01:01.363
Welcome everybody.
00:01:01.363 --> 00:01:04.626
Welcome back to another episode of Renewed Mindsets.
00:01:04.626 --> 00:01:09.248
I'm Rick and today, as always, I'm joined by Lauren.
00:01:10.209 --> 00:01:10.870
Hi everyone.
00:01:10.870 --> 00:01:15.533
We are so thrilled you're here because we have a really special episode for you.
00:01:15.533 --> 00:01:15.793
Today.
00:01:15.793 --> 00:01:22.518
We're diving deep into something a lot of people don't even think twice about, and that's Christmas traditions.
00:01:25.120 --> 00:01:25.600
That's right Now.
00:01:25.600 --> 00:01:31.100
Some of these traditions might seem innocent, but when we look closely we'll see that they might not align with God's word.
00:01:32.343 --> 00:01:33.346
And a fair warning.
00:01:33.346 --> 00:01:37.216
We might stir the pot a little bit today.
00:01:37.216 --> 00:01:44.308
Some of the things we're going to talk about might be a little uncomfortable, but it's all in the spirit of growing closer to Christ.
00:01:44.929 --> 00:01:50.296
So grab a cup of coffee or hot chocolate, settle in and let's get started.
00:01:50.296 --> 00:01:54.010
Section one questioning the familiar.
00:01:54.010 --> 00:02:00.933
So let's start with one of the most iconic symbols of Christmas the decorated tree.
00:02:00.933 --> 00:02:06.513
It's in every shopping mall, in every living room, in every Hallmark movie.
00:02:06.513 --> 00:02:09.264
But have we ever stopped to ask why?
00:02:10.186 --> 00:02:20.852
Exactly, and most people think of the Christmas tree as harmless or a festive decoration, but its origins might surprise you a little bit.
00:02:20.852 --> 00:02:27.610
In fact, there's a passage in the Bible that seems to describe something very, very similar, and not in a good way.
00:02:28.131 --> 00:02:30.495
Oh, you're probably thinking of Jeremiah 10.
00:02:30.495 --> 00:02:37.040
Now that passage warns against cutting down a tree decorating with silver and gold and propping it up.
00:02:37.040 --> 00:02:41.868
It's a practice barred from pagan cultures, and God was very clear.
00:02:41.868 --> 00:02:45.534
His people were not to follow those customs.
00:02:47.161 --> 00:03:01.211
And even though some argue that this passage is about idol worship specifically, it raises one very important question If we're borrowing traditions with pagan roots, even unintentionally, are we really honoring God?
00:03:02.693 --> 00:03:02.935
Are we.
00:03:02.935 --> 00:03:05.265
I hear it.
00:03:05.265 --> 00:03:14.840
I hear bubbles getting burst everywhere, and that's true, because one of God's most important commands is be holy, because I am holy.
00:03:14.840 --> 00:03:18.044
We find that in Leviticus 1144.
00:03:18.044 --> 00:03:20.830
We find it in 1 Peter, 116.
00:03:20.830 --> 00:03:28.981
Holiness means being set apart 116.
00:03:28.981 --> 00:03:31.209
Holiness means being set apart, living by God's standards and not blending worldly practices with our faith.
00:03:31.209 --> 00:03:33.717
Now, lauren's going to talk more about this later in depth.
00:03:34.620 --> 00:03:36.564
It's definitely worth reflecting on that.
00:03:36.564 --> 00:03:45.453
How often do we spend more effort on picking the perfect ornaments or lighting the tree than we do reflecting on the miracle of Christ's birth?
00:03:45.879 --> 00:03:47.764
Oh, you just stomping all over it.
00:03:47.764 --> 00:03:58.413
So as we think about these traditions, let's ask ourselves are they helping us to live out God's call to holiness or are they pulling us further from it?
00:03:58.413 --> 00:04:01.944
Section two Santa Claus and materialism.
00:04:02.605 --> 00:04:02.907
All right.
00:04:02.907 --> 00:04:07.474
So another big topic is going to be Santa Claus.
00:04:07.474 --> 00:04:21.615
This one is especially tough because, let's be honest, we all grew up loving the idea of Santa and I know you did, rick but where does he fit into a Christ-centered?
00:04:21.654 --> 00:04:21.879
Christmas.
00:04:22.261 --> 00:04:22.862
Who ever heard?
00:04:22.903 --> 00:04:24.187
of a skinny Santa.
00:04:24.187 --> 00:04:29.380
I'm so sorry.
00:04:29.380 --> 00:04:44.447
Santa claus has become almost synonymous with christmas, but when we dig a little deeper, we realize that this tradition carries some concerning spiritual implications yes, that's exactly right, and santa is often portrayed as omniscient.
00:04:45.209 --> 00:04:48.124
He sees you when you're sleeping, he knows when you're awake.
00:04:48.124 --> 00:04:49.146
Does that sound familiar?
00:04:49.286 --> 00:04:50.149
Sounds a little creepy.
00:04:50.579 --> 00:04:54.600
Yeah, I agree, and that mirrors attributes that belong to God alone.
00:04:54.600 --> 00:04:56.004
Yes, exactly.
00:04:56.144 --> 00:05:10.430
God is the only one who is truly omniscient, and when we attribute those qualities to Santa, even in a playful way, we dilute the holiness of God and it can confuse children about who is truly sovereign.
00:05:10.779 --> 00:05:15.932
Plus Santa promotes a works-based system, rewarding kids based on behavior.
00:05:15.932 --> 00:05:18.689
That's the opposite of God's grace, which is freely given.
00:05:19.300 --> 00:05:21.125
Yeah, and another thing that I just thought of.
00:05:21.125 --> 00:05:29.307
You know, we all know that Santa's not real, right, but we teach our kids this and then they that Santa's not real, right, but we teach our kids this and then they get to a certain age and we tell them we were lying.
00:05:29.307 --> 00:05:40.165
Yep, but we've also been telling them about Jesus, hopefully, and at the same time, what's to make those kids not just believe that the, that Jesus isn't real?
00:05:40.165 --> 00:05:44.341
I mean exactly, you know the parents are the ones that lied to them.
00:05:44.341 --> 00:05:46.285
So I mean I know people are, parents are the ones that lied to them.
00:05:46.285 --> 00:05:51.874
So I mean I know people are out there rolling their eyes right now saying, well, they're just extremists.
00:05:51.874 --> 00:06:04.966
But we can't forget that Santa's origins are mixed in with mythology and even elements of folklore, that they conflict with biblical teaching.
00:06:04.966 --> 00:06:10.117
God warns us in Deuteronomy 18, 10 through 12 to avoid anything that's connected to sorcery or divination.
00:06:10.559 --> 00:06:16.127
Exactly and honestly Santa his origins, the person that he comes from.
00:06:16.127 --> 00:06:19.172
St Nicholas isn't exactly good.
00:06:19.172 --> 00:06:21.213
Well, he's evil.
00:06:21.875 --> 00:06:22.175
Right?
00:06:22.175 --> 00:06:24.548
Well, we don't worry about the saints anyway, right?
00:06:25.380 --> 00:06:28.269
And, if we're honest, santa often steals the spotlight.
00:06:28.269 --> 00:06:36.333
Families invest literally so much time preparing for Santa, but how much time do they spend honoring Christ?
00:06:36.353 --> 00:06:37.033
That's a good one.
00:06:37.033 --> 00:06:43.512
It's worth stepping back and asking is Santa helping us focus on Jesus?
00:06:43.512 --> 00:06:48.500
Is Santa helping us and our children focus on Jesus or is?
00:06:48.521 --> 00:06:49.362
he a distraction.
00:06:49.362 --> 00:07:02.341
That's good, and when we remove Santa, we make more room for Christ, and that's the real magic of Christmas, something real and eternal, something that's going to last forever.
00:07:02.562 --> 00:07:02.822
Yeah.
00:07:03.423 --> 00:07:11.978
Section three other questionable traditions Okay, now let's talk about some other traditions, like mistletoe.
00:07:13.141 --> 00:07:13.822
Mistletoe.
00:07:13.822 --> 00:07:16.716
Mistletoe has pagan origins.
00:07:16.716 --> 00:07:18.836
It was used in fertility rituals.
00:07:18.836 --> 00:07:20.355
So what do we use it for?
00:07:20.355 --> 00:07:25.482
We hang it in our house and if two people are caught beneath it they kiss.
00:07:25.482 --> 00:07:28.899
I mean, that's pretty much a fertility ritual.
00:07:28.899 --> 00:07:32.920
Bringing that into our homes can mix worldly practices with our faith.
00:07:33.389 --> 00:07:37.201
Yeah, I never really understood the whole mistletoe concept myself.
00:07:37.300 --> 00:07:39.154
anyway, Because nobody wanted to kiss you.
00:07:40.240 --> 00:07:40.641
I guess.
00:07:40.641 --> 00:07:44.814
So sorry, we can't put that in there, yeah.
00:07:44.894 --> 00:07:45.355
I can.
00:07:45.757 --> 00:07:46.076
No.
00:07:48.442 --> 00:07:49.163
It's Christmas.
00:07:49.163 --> 00:07:50.975
It's a time for joyous laughter.
00:07:51.076 --> 00:07:52.059
I know that's so sad.
00:07:52.471 --> 00:07:56.637
I'm going to get roasted yeah, but you're at home with your brother and your parents.
00:07:56.637 --> 00:07:57.699
Who the heck you're gonna kiss?
00:07:57.759 --> 00:08:10.540
I'm gonna get roasted bad nobody listens go and let's not forget excessive feasting, oh yeah, feasting, oh yeah, feasting.
00:08:10.540 --> 00:08:15.545
Gratitude can easily turn into gluttony if we're not careful.
00:08:16.105 --> 00:08:17.786
Thanks, lauren, you're welcome.
00:08:17.786 --> 00:08:19.817
Thank you, lauren, for calling me fat.
00:08:19.817 --> 00:08:24.476
I figured you needed to hear that Celebrations should honor God.
00:08:24.476 --> 00:08:30.642
Let's ask them or let's ask ourselves is this helping me grow in holiness?
00:08:30.642 --> 00:08:33.938
Section four redeeming Christmas.
00:08:33.938 --> 00:08:40.520
So if we're stepping away from some traditions, how can we keep Christ at the center?
00:08:41.342 --> 00:08:42.063
Be intentional.
00:08:42.063 --> 00:08:48.197
A manger scene is a beautiful way to keep the focus on Jesus and, honestly, that's what me and my family do.
00:08:48.197 --> 00:08:52.782
We put up this gorgeous manger light straping.
00:08:52.782 --> 00:08:55.158
We'll put hay inside the manger.
00:08:55.158 --> 00:08:57.115
It's just as beautiful.
00:08:58.429 --> 00:09:00.475
Yeah, and you don't have a tree to take down.
00:09:00.876 --> 00:09:02.421
Exactly no, mess.
00:09:03.090 --> 00:09:14.283
Well, we need to start traditions that include giving Now that will reflect God's generosity and bless others, especially those in need.
00:09:16.054 --> 00:09:17.500
And worshiping is definitely key.
00:09:17.500 --> 00:09:25.340
Sing carols that celebrate Christ and read Luke 2 together as a family, or, in fact, just go ahead and read the entirety of Luke while you're at it.
00:09:26.302 --> 00:09:26.690
Our churches.
00:09:26.690 --> 00:09:32.119
Start small, invest in traditions that honor God.
00:09:32.119 --> 00:09:36.975
Christmas doesn't have to look like the world's version of Christmas to be meaningful.
00:09:37.758 --> 00:09:41.553
Right, and let's make this season about worship, gratitude and renewal.
00:09:41.553 --> 00:09:43.701
That's a Christmas worth celebrating, for sure.
00:09:44.051 --> 00:09:51.554
It is, and as we get closer to Christmas I think we're a week away now, if you're listening to this on the day that it drops.
00:09:51.554 --> 00:09:52.678
Oh yeah, it's coming up.
00:09:52.678 --> 00:10:03.865
I thank you so much for listening and I hope that this conversation today inspires you to reflect on your Christmas traditions and ask do these honor God?
00:10:05.169 --> 00:10:11.076
And I also want you all to remember that it's not about perfection, it's about putting Christ first.
00:10:11.457 --> 00:10:14.594
Yes, thank you for joining us.
00:10:14.594 --> 00:10:15.216
We love you.
00:10:15.216 --> 00:10:17.517
See ya, bye.
00:10:17.517 --> 00:10:25.437
And now a joyous Christmas tale.
00:10:27.751 --> 00:10:30.794
A woman takes her 16-year-old daughter to the doctor.
00:10:30.794 --> 00:10:34.399
The doctor says okay, mrs Jones, what's the problem?
00:10:34.399 --> 00:10:37.259
The mother says it's my daughter, darla.
00:10:37.259 --> 00:10:42.941
She keeps getting these cravings, she's putting on weight and is sick most every morning.
00:10:42.941 --> 00:10:54.292
The doctor gives Darla a good examination and then turns to the mother and says well, I don't know how to tell you this, but your Darla is pregnant About four months, would be my guess.
00:10:54.292 --> 00:10:57.282
The mother says well, I don't know how to tell you this, but your Darla is pregnant About four months, would be my guess.
00:10:57.302 --> 00:10:58.424
The mother says pregnant, she can't be.
00:10:58.424 --> 00:11:01.573
She's never even been left alone with a man, have you Darla?
00:11:01.573 --> 00:11:05.623
And Darla says no, mother, I've never even kissed a man.
00:11:05.623 --> 00:11:09.437
The doctor walked over to the window and just stares out of it.
00:11:09.437 --> 00:11:14.836
About five minutes pass and the mother finally says is there something wrong out there, doctor?
00:11:14.836 --> 00:11:17.682
The doctor replies no, not really.
00:11:17.682 --> 00:11:24.629
It's just that the last time anything like this happened, a star appeared in the east and three wise men came over a hill.
00:11:24.629 --> 00:11:27.634
And I'll be John Brown if I'm going to miss it this time.
00:11:33.081 --> 00:11:33.380
All right.
00:11:33.380 --> 00:11:37.206
So let's talk about understanding holiness in our lives.
00:11:37.206 --> 00:11:44.943
So many of you have chosen to accept Christ as your Lord and Savior, but what comes next Like what comes after that?
00:11:44.943 --> 00:11:47.938
Is that the end of the journey or is there more to it?
00:11:47.938 --> 00:11:52.597
Can we just continue living as we did before now, safe from hell?
00:11:52.597 --> 00:12:01.243
Let's explore what the Bible says 1 Peter 1, 13 through 16.
00:12:01.783 --> 00:12:03.125
Prepare your minds for action.
00:12:03.125 --> 00:12:04.428
Be self-controlled.
00:12:04.428 --> 00:12:08.438
Set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed.
00:12:08.438 --> 00:12:13.530
As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance.
00:12:13.530 --> 00:12:17.620
But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do.
00:12:17.620 --> 00:12:20.552
For it is written be holy because I am holy.
00:12:22.176 --> 00:12:22.876
What is holiness?
00:12:22.876 --> 00:12:30.297
When we think of holiness, some might imagine like a monk in a monastery or an elderly person constantly reading the Bible.
00:12:30.297 --> 00:12:34.283
But holiness is simply about being changed and set apart for God.
00:12:34.283 --> 00:12:37.090
2 Corinthians 5.17.
00:12:37.090 --> 00:12:41.282
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, they are a new creation.
00:12:41.282 --> 00:12:43.538
The old has gone, the new is here.
00:12:43.538 --> 00:12:49.543
Being in Christ makes us new, which means our lives should change after salvation.
00:12:50.410 --> 00:12:54.298
There must be a noticeable difference between our lives and the world's ways.
00:12:54.298 --> 00:12:56.302
Living a holy life.
00:12:56.302 --> 00:12:59.798
A holy life is one fully committed to God.
00:12:59.798 --> 00:13:02.418
God's holiness calls us to be holy too.
00:13:02.418 --> 00:13:04.054
There is no in between.
00:13:04.054 --> 00:13:08.100
There is no half doing something.
00:13:08.100 --> 00:13:10.798
You're all in or you're all out.
00:13:10.798 --> 00:13:19.359
In John 5, 5, jesus healed a crippled man and later told him sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.
00:13:19.359 --> 00:13:28.260
In John 8.11, jesus forgave a woman caught in adultery and told her neither do I condemn thee, go and sin no more.
00:13:28.260 --> 00:13:40.792
Both were restored to God and instructed to live differently after Applying holiness in our lives.
00:13:40.812 --> 00:13:42.957
Holiness isn't about being perfect, but it's about being serious in our commitment to God.
00:13:42.957 --> 00:13:44.761
It's following his commands and living a life pleasing to him.
00:13:44.761 --> 00:13:49.145
We should gather for worship and support each other, but that's just the start.
00:13:49.145 --> 00:13:59.573
We need to take Christ with us everywhere, into our work, family, friendships, decisions and even small problems.
00:13:59.573 --> 00:14:02.019
A life given over to God might seem radical, but it leads to peace, joy and assurance.
00:14:02.019 --> 00:14:04.104
It aligns us with God's plan for us as well.
00:14:04.104 --> 00:14:09.842
We must reflect God's love to the world, showing differences in our behavior, goals and desires.
00:14:09.842 --> 00:14:14.432
Our lives should visibly demonstrate our faith without needing lengthy explanations.
00:14:15.956 --> 00:14:17.058
Matthew 5.16,.
00:14:17.058 --> 00:14:21.894
Let your light shine before others that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
00:14:21.894 --> 00:14:24.340
How to live a holy life?
00:14:24.340 --> 00:14:29.494
To live a holy life, we need to obey God completely and be filled with the Holy Spirit.
00:14:29.494 --> 00:14:35.801
Living in sin grieves the Holy Spirit Accepting Christ as a choice, and so is living a holy life.
00:14:35.801 --> 00:14:38.004
This choice must be made daily.
00:14:38.004 --> 00:14:39.625
Remember we belong to Christ.
00:14:44.750 --> 00:14:47.662
Living a holy life is about constantly striving to align ourselves with God's will and reflecting His love to the world.
00:14:47.662 --> 00:14:48.566
Communicating with God.
00:14:48.566 --> 00:14:59.553
Second, we need to communicate with our Lord in prayer, and not just once or twice a week, every single day, every moment you get, talk to him.
00:14:59.553 --> 00:15:01.759
He wants to be talked to like he's a friend.
00:15:01.759 --> 00:15:07.802
We should praise him, thank him, ask for his help and, most importantly, listen to him.
00:15:07.802 --> 00:15:13.034
Even Jesus found it necessary to pray, sometimes all night long, if he needed it.
00:15:13.495 --> 00:15:16.988
How much more do we Immersing in God's word?
00:15:16.988 --> 00:15:21.337
Third, we need to be immersed in God's word because it holds the answers.
00:15:21.337 --> 00:15:25.635
It is literally food for the spirit.
00:15:25.635 --> 00:15:29.475
It gives us direction, wisdom and understanding.
00:15:29.475 --> 00:15:38.669
It's the most direct way God speaks to us, showing us the eternal principles of how to live a holy life in Christ Jesus, understanding holiness.
00:15:38.669 --> 00:15:41.852
Holiness isn't just a list of do's and don'ts.
00:15:41.852 --> 00:15:45.836
It's about conforming to the character of God and being obedient to his will.
00:15:45.836 --> 00:15:49.778
It's the natural result of salvation through Jesus Christ.
00:15:49.778 --> 00:15:53.572
Holiness reflects the character and behavior of a new creature in him.
00:15:53.572 --> 00:15:57.749
It's the power of the Holy Spirit working in a life submitted to Almighty God.
00:15:57.749 --> 00:16:02.530
Holiness is what makes His church the city on a hill that cannot be hidden.
00:16:02.530 --> 00:16:04.155
Are we that church?
00:16:08.206 --> 00:16:10.250
Well, that's all for this week's show.
00:16:10.250 --> 00:16:13.918
You know the name of this show speaks my hope for you.
00:16:13.918 --> 00:16:17.812

00:16:17.812 --> 00:16:32.155
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind that by testing, you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
